The Hokey

I had a boy tell me that standing with my hand on my heart when the Colors were presented was hokey. It hurt my feelings but I didn't say anything. Maybe I should have. Anyhow, I wrote this and I was going to give it to him. Haven't yet but I thought I might share the thought.

The hokey, as it is called, is the essence that keeps we older ones breathing. We have seen firsthand the horror of war and the prostitution of our sacred institutions for avarice and greed. We know personally the crushing disappointment of seeing our promising youngsters waste their gifts. We have seen the land raped with impunity, no sorrow expressed, no apology offered. Toward the end, which is near for many of us, all we have is the hokey, the memories of many sweet moments, some shared, some intensely private. And in the end, all these memories will swirl in our minds, twisting and spinning, faster and faster until, like a color wheel, nothing but bright light will be seen. And then, in an instant, we will know why we were here.

I like the words, but I personally thin a swift kick in the * would show him what "hokey" really is.

When I was a kid the hand over the heart was only for the Pledge of Allegiance, but in recent years, I see folks doing it for the National Anthem. Where was I when that changed? Was it an official change, confusion, or just folks adding a little "hokeiness" to the good old Anthem? It seems incorrect to me, but also harmless and hokey in the kind of way Whiteclouder intends.

Just as "hokey" as removing your hat during the National Anthem or when the Colors pass by. I guess I'm as "hokey" as they come.

Last November at the local Veteran's Day parade I was standing next to a couple old WWII vets when the Marine color guard passed by. We all removed our hats but a few teenage kids standing in front of us didn't follow suit and were also hooting and hollering and generally playing grab-*. One of the old boys leaned forward and told the kids to straighten up, shut up and remove their hats when in the presence of our flag. One of them started to say some wise-* remark, then took another look at the grizzled old dude, thought better of it and the three of them wiped the hats off their heads. It was a classic. One look at the ol' Vet and they knew how serious he was. It made my day.
