Wife says I can't hear

I'm really having a hard time hearing my wife talk, especially in restaurants & other places with a lot of background activity. Ear Dr says that I have normal hearing but wife swears I'm deaf.... Yes, I am REALLY trying to listen. Any good ideas out there?

Several years ago I thought I had hit on a wonderful time saving idea. After hearing many of my wife's stories many times I suggested that she just number her stories from 1-100 then she could just tell me a number and I would give the right response. Maybe laugh at #16 but be very supportive with story #58. She didn't think that was a very workable system because she didn't say anything for several days.
I thought at one time that maybe I could just filter in the important words when she was talking but that system also seemed to fail. There always came a time when I suddenly realized that I might have missed a salient point of her discourse. (THE LOOK) So now when she wants to talk I just fold up the newspaper, lay it down, turn in my chair and stare her right in the eye.

It's a "girl thing." All wives say that. ;-)

Actually, in my case, I am "tone deaf" from many years of loud noises (shooting). My wife's voice is in the tone range that is difficult for me to hear. And being in a room full of talking people--even road noise when driving, makes it worse. I am constantly asking her to repeat herself and speak louder...much to her exasperation. :-(

My experience on this is that after awhile, the sound of yer woman flapping her gums becomes white noise, kinda like living next to the railroad tracks and not even hearing the trains when they come by anymore. The constant noise just gets tuned out by yer brain, to make room for more important concerns like "what kinda gun am I gonna buy next?", and "how much beer is left in the fridge?".

My solution to this is that when I see her mouth moving I just nod and smile understandingly.

If you have trouble hearing over background noise, get another doctor. You have a hearing problem. I have a level of high pitch that I cannot hear, so digital watch beeps and the like are useless to me.
My wife seems to want to go to the far end of the house, stick her head in a closet and whisper. Then get p.o'ed if I ask her to repeat herself. She says my hearing improves dramatically if she mentions anything to do with sex. Duh!

I've got the same problem, mine is from construction and big machinery mostly. I can't believe the guns had anything to do with it. Most of my hearing loss is in the higher pitches also. I can still hear hunting noises fairly well if the leaves don't rustle too much.
As far as hearing my wife...well thats still another story, if it wasn't for her high pitched wine perhaps I'd be able to pick up on a word here or there. But yes the back ground noise gets me into trouble more often that I care to remember!

wundudnee, I sure like that numbering idea. Don't know if I'll try it, though; suspect it would lead to the sound of silence here as well . . . . Wait a minute, what am I saying?! I'll try it straight away ! Mine can't fathom why I feel I can listen to her, inject the proper sounds and still read the paper. Hey, after the 123rd time, I would hope I knew which story required which response.

I dont know why but past two girls I've been with say I have a hard time hearing them. I took a hearing test a few weeks ago and my hearing is perfect...I think it may be the female voice in general. Of course there are a few words that are picked up very easily as Rickstir said

I'm just kidding ladies. My girlfriend is is 4'11 and I'm 6'2...when I can't hear something she says (and she whispers most of the time) I tell her that her voice is going straight into my chest and thats why I can't hear.

East Bay, this is a problem? All I hear is my wife talking, and talking and talking.... It never ends. I swear if she stopped talking for two minutes I'd have to check her pulse to make sure she was still alive.

Funny how we are so different. I can sit with somebody for three hours and not say a single word.

wundudnee, LMAO, that sounds exactly like my living room's events. I have recently started the look right at her method. I figure it may help me to remember what all she just said in the last 15 minutes. I too have experienced the "glare" too many times. I hate it when she say's,...."are you listening to me?".......yes dear......."what did I just say?",......Uhhhhhhhhhh

Perfect hearing at 50 is not the same as perfect hearing at 20. Try another doctor or have additional hearing done. White noise makes it harder to pull a single voice out of the background, and her voice may be pitched such that it does not carry well. Those female voices that will etch glass do carry, while more pleasant voices often do not. The lady of my house also likes to talk into the closet around three corners, while I brush with the water and fan going. Even the keenest hearing can't pull that out!

Hedog my wife will do the same damn trick to me. I think its on purpose. Alot of the time I have to piece together partial sentences to get the jist-of-it.

If she knows about my hearing problem why doesn't she try to look at me when speaking instead of walking to another room; and then getting pissed!

MAN NOW YOU GOT ME GOING; I SOUND JUST LIKE HER!

Do you know why men pass gas more than women?

Because they don't keep their mouth shut long enough to build up the required pressure.

My wife says my memory is bad, because she can tell me something and next day I don't remember it.

Not true! I wasn't listening the first time.

My selective hearing, worsened by a lifetime of shooting and a few intense close by explosions, puts me at a disadvantage in understanding my German wife. Her heavy accent coupled with a failure to carefully form English words has become a real problem in comprehension.

OK, I brought up the number thing today to my wife, and I got to tell you, it really pissed her off...not only does she mumble, but she has no sense of humor. What was I thinking?
