I don't have any answers, but why would you want to go to an earlier version of Windows OS?

Without the security key (the numbers) there is no way to load a system fromn your cd. You can try to guess, but there are a lot of combinations. Also note, Windows 95 is no longer supported and many nes programs do not support it. BUT I am with you, I like 95 better. That is what I have on this unit. If you cannot load 95 and really want to, let me know there are ways.

I guess I should have said my main problem is formatting the hard drive so I can install 95. I think my son has a 95 cd with numbers. I guess I'm just an old foggie because I just gave up 3.1 six months ago! I have XP pro at work and hate it. Rosie

Don't try to format your hard drive unless you know what you are doing. You may have special drivers for your peripherals that need to be saved before you reformat. Also you need to verify that you have backed everything up that you don't want to go far far away. This is not a job for a novice. JMTCW

Heck njretcop, I'm thinking of setting that computer back in. Had a lot less trouble with that old Packard Bell! Paid $2.800.00 for it in 94. Rosie

I'm a Mac guy; I don't fiddle much with that annoying Windows stuff.

I would suggest that you "give yourself enough time" with the new operating system before changing back--you might grow accustomed to it.

I don't know what it is with software designers and why they make the changes they do.

A friend of mine describes it like this: if you buy a new car, you might want new features, but you don't want the brake pedal where the gas pedal used to be, and the gas pedal where the brake was!

But that's about what software designers do when they "create a newer version" of something. And Apple has been just as guilty on this as Microsoft--as are all the application software makers.

The "geeks" are just being given too much control in the software business. Somebody needs to tell them "NO, you don't change THAT!"

Rosie, us too. We had the first Pentium computer in our neighborhood. It cost us 24000.00, was a 60MZH pentium with a 750mg hard drive and a printer that printer one page an hour, lol.

If you are that hot on Win95, let me know. I will burn it for you and send it along with the key.

Email me if you want it.

    Carefull Njretcop,
Microsoft has been cracking down on software piracy BIG time.
In fact most of the new software scans for internet connectivity and AUTOMATICALLY registers with the home servers.

Yes, my dad paid $5000 for his first 386 with a 15" monitor and a dot matrix printer. Sounds insane now. But then calculators from Texas Instruments used to cost $500.

As for Windows 95, it is possible your computer backed up 95 when 98 installed. You really could use a local techy to help you figure out what your options are. You might even have a folder of old .CAB files with your 95 install backed up.

If it were me, I might "slam" 95 on your computer and see what happens. In other words, I might try to run 95 setup and every time it asks me if I want to replace the newer file with the older one, say "yes." But I'm fearless to a fault.

Go to your local Wal-mart drop 899.00 on a Hewlett-Packard with printer and you'll get a good pc with Windows me. and should like it better than what you've got with Win 98.

So now you have a 95 cd and a set of numbers to try. All you need now is boot disk. I don't remember exactly where in 95 the option to create one will be but try this...hit START go to Settings then control panel and I think there is an option in one of the folders there to create a boot disk. It may be part of the Add/Remove programs. Then it is just a matter of booting with the boot disk and at the a:\ prompt type format c: This will format the C: drive wiping out everything. When this finishes you can put the 95 cd in and install windows 95. Best of luck.

I just remembered....If you have a boot disk from your old 3.1 it should work. A boot disk is a boot disk is a boot disk.

Don't forget to boot with cd rom support. Then make a note of the virtual drive letter, you will want to prompt to that letter. Going to an older OS you will need to type "fdisk mbr" to wipe out the master boot record before you reinstall windows. The Master Boot Record will survive an format and you will have conflicts going to an older OS if you leave it. After MBR is done just type format c:, tell it yes. After it is done you will need the drive letter for the CD Rom, promt to that letter then type setup and away you go.

WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT DO AN OVERTOP INSTAL!! THAT IS THE MOST ABSOLUTE WORSE THING YOU CAN DO TO A COMPUTER! YOU WILL HAVE CONFLICTS AND ERRORS OUT THE *! OVERTOP INSTALLS FIX NOTHING AND CAUSE MAJOR HARM TO THE .INI.

Hi Rosie. What kind of PC are you running? How old is it? What type of processor, etc., does it have and what peripherals do you run? CD-RW, printers, etc. I am no pro by a long shot but wanted to lend a hand if I can. The two best ideas I saw on this thread are to stick with Win98 or buy a new PC. Pavil
