Does anyone know what kind of two way radios were used (and possibly where to get)in the movies Tears of the Sun, GI Jane and the Hunted is the most recent. They have a push to talk wrap around throat mike and an integral earpiece. I believe you can see the transmitter/reciever on the back belts in GI Jane?

Thanks Drawn

    Drawn,

I believe it was the new MBITR radio. This radio was recently pushed down to the squad level in most of the regular Army units, but before that they were all but SOF specific. Great little secure radio which can talk over a decent distance. Have used it quite regularly in support of Operation ENDURING FREESDOM and IRAGI FREEDOM, no major problems. Do not think you'll be able to pick one up at Radio Shack for a while.

For good Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) technology, look at some of the Bear Cat stuff out there. Also, almost all of the newest intra-squad radios are able to accept the throat/earpiece mod you are interested in.

Not sure of the radio's you mention because I havent seen any of those movies. But Motorolla has radio's that can be set up exactly like that. The professional type will cost ya around $600.00 and your frequency's or channels would be very limited.Kenwood offers the same type radio's they are what we use in our cruiser's as well as our portables. But you can get GMRS radios with 2 watts of power,up to 5 mile range(FCC License required)or FRS =Family radio service(no License required) radios that have about a mile range in flat land there only throwing .05 watt of power. The FCC has set this band width just for recreational use.You can get a pair of these set up the way you mentioned the ones in the movies for under $100.00.HTH

    Best!!
