Burglar Beaten by Karate Expert
Tue May 14, 9:50 AM ET

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A burglar who tried to strangle a South African woman ended up in hospital with a fractured skull when the 45-year-old karate expert fought back, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The Star said Marietjie Fourie, who will compete in the Shotokan Karate World Championships in 2003, let fly a flurry of blows when her attacker grabbed her at her home in the port city of Durban.

The man struck back, but Fourie grabbed wooden fighting sticks joined by a chain and lit into him, putting him in hospital with a smashed skull and * bones.

Fourie was quoted by the newspaper as saying it was the third time she had physically repelled intruders or attackers.

"Every time I have caught someone trying to break into my house or attack me, I have beaten them off, incapacitating them or forcing them to flee," she said.

South Africa has one of the world's highest rates of violent crime and violence against women is widespread http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20020514/od_nm/karate_dc_1

"If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege." - Arkansas Supreme Court, 1878

    Great story SaxonPig.

Guns are great, but the mind and body is still the ultimate weapon. My Tae Kwon Do instuctor, his brother, and thier sparring partner (all 3rd degree black belts) were watching the 4th of July Fireworks on the mall in front of the capitol one year, when some thugs tried to rob em. Out of 6 attackers, 4 had broken arms, 3 had broken legs, and broken ribs one can only guess.

Having the power to weild a firearm is great, but being able to beat the bejesus out of a perp is awesome.

My gun is prettier than yours, and it's a Glock!

Well I have to agree that training in martial arts does boost self confidence 100%. I had a few years when a young wippersnapper, and when working corrections, but my wife, 17 year old daughter, and 11 year old son are all three blue belts. They spar and practice in the house (kinda wierd seeing them yell, punch and kick - when they used to be shy of phisical contact - I love to see them really apply themselves). My daughter can kick over my 6' head, and my boy has better moves than I ever did. I feel a little bit better about their chances of defending themselves. I still wish my wife was a little more accepting of carrying concealed, but to each his/her own....

Reminds me of an arrest some 20 years ago I will never forget. The BG was a former black belt with many awards who somehow turned to bad side and liked to drink and fight. We went to arrest him and prepared for a fight. He gave up without any trouble. I asked him why he gave up so easy? He replied we had guns and no matter how good he was at martial arts, he couldn't chop a bullet. I learned from him each has its place.

The only problem I can see with merely incapacitating and injuring
an assailant is,the all-to-eager injury lawyer willing to take his civil case against you(or me).

Wonder why fellas keep breaking in?

Like in the NFL, defense is the key.
