Someone having a bad day? I think he should lose his job for endangering a life, your thoughts?

Yeah, I am not sure that it is anywhere in the 911 playbook that you should hang up on a caller.

Someone pissed in his Cheerios and he took it out on her. Could have been a death involved and he could have been charge with a crime far worse than just getting 2 weeks off without pay.

    Never should have happened.

Another "public servant" allowing emotion to dictate an unlawful action.

Do we think he feels a sense of "entitlement", or that he has a erroneous claim to some "superiority", a case of "contempt of cop", or that this is a classic "us vs. them" manifestation?

Barney Fife needs to get into another line of work.

    I answered 911 calls for years as a Paramedic/dispatcher.
It is inconsequential if the caller should curse, or display any erratic behavior. Indeed, if it is an emergency, erratic behavior would be normal on the part of the caller.

All that matters is that the dispatcher ascertain if an emergency exists, and if so, to get the address and send help.

Bye, bye Barney. Be sure go give Sheriff Andy your bullet, on the way out the door.

I'm surprised that this department wastes it's law enforcement resources by having officers answer phones. It ain't easy to handle 911 calls, but civilians do that job just fine. Anybody stupid enough to swear on a recorded line (the officer) deserves to be fired.

And it ain't real tough to find about 5 violations of Policy and Procedure that are fire able offenses in that recording. I'm thinking he was there doing light duty, and he was padding his 5150 retirement action.

While we all should be given a break when, ordinarily, we do the right thing and in fact are known for just that, but for some unearthly reason we do the absolute bass-ackward stupidest possible thing at a critical time, and for no reason? Sorry, not this time Sarge. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts (a little cop humor there for those who may have missed it!) that if the truth be known, there is some history, perhaps only recent, that would support the suspicion that this type behavior had been displayed by the good Sergeant for some time now. Unfortunately this is not a situation that can go unpunished, swept under the rug, downplayed, or trivialized one bit. This very easily might have cost a life. If he behaves in this manner with a young * a telephone emergency line, what else might he be predispositioned to do at this point if, let's say, he is confronted with a live situation on the verge of becoming violent? Maybe his 20 yrs have gotten to him. (not an unreasonable hypothesis). Or, is this why he is on phone duty to begin with? Was he taken off the street already as a precaution? The unusually candid response from the chief makes me think this is a very real possibility. If not, the Chief deserves much credit for accepting responsibility on behalf of the department, at a time in our history when responsibility reassignment (isn't that a nice term?), trivializing, and smoke-and-mirrors doubletalk seems to be the norm. Whatever the truth may be, the Sarge needs help, and soon. And, the public needs to be safeguarded from this man. Immediately. Or, maybe I should just STF up, and mind my own business, seeing as how it didn't happen in my town. Hummmmmmm................

The girl and her dad have a lawyer, and may sue.
However, the main case for winning a lawsuit is to show damages.
They did not explain, in this story, that the father was damaged by the inept work by the policeman/dispatcher.
If the father's medical condition was not worsened due to inept work by the dispatcher, I don't see where they have much of a suit.

This is unfortunate, because the Chief wants to give this nitwit a pass.

The pathetic policeman/dispatcher has 20 years in, as someone else said, he probably is along for the ride, just milking it until he collects his pension.

As tpacuriosity said, why would a $62K cop be at the dispatcher's desk?
He must have already proven to be a loose cannon in the field.

Most of these guys are working 12 hr. shifts, and have to fill in
for short staff and sick people. The guy was having a bad day
obviously shouldn't have been working the phones. He should
have owned his behavior. He's been in 20 yrs, with commendations.
Some counseling is needed. He did wrong.
