I have a friend who is a metallurgical (spelling?) engineer for the U.S. Army. He created a new type of compound that is a mix of titanium and ceramic, to be used for things like armor.

Well, he asked me to take a chunk of this metal and shoot a couple of rounds at it!!! Then, he'll take it back to the lab and analyze it.

Cool, huh?

So, what do you suppose I should use? My largest rifle is a .30-06. I don't have any steel-core ammo for anything but my brother's SKS.

I'm thinking the M1A won't do as much damage as the 06, any ideas?

    Use everything you've got. It's a test isn't it?

Well, he actually wrote two X's in the metal with a bright marker. I'm supposed to shoot at the center of each X only once.

So, since I can only make two shots (and good ones at that, the block of metal is about 3" x 3") I want to use the meanest thing I can.

By the way, have any of you ever heard of a tool that cuts metal with WATER? I was told that this 2" thick block of extremely hard metal was cut with water!! Amazing.

I would use the -06 on one of the blocks and something else (maybe your highest velocity cartridge) on the other.

It would be intesting to try a teflon coated or an armor piercing on one, wouldn't it?

No. The water cutting machine is an abrasive water jet. Water at about 50,000 PSI and an abrasive will cut most anything. No heat to distort material. Really cool to watch, and the water and abrasive are reused.
I have seen them at Westec Shows, way to expensive for me.

Water jet cutting is very neat. We use it on some of our odd shaped cuts instead of EDM. It does a wonderful job, and will cut virtually anything!

If 30.06 is your most powerful use it. I would try to see if I could get hold of a magnum though first from a friend or something. 300 winchester, 300 ultra, 300 short mag. as you can see I like the 300's.

If you want to hit this stuff as hard as you can, you need to maximize the factors that add to the delivered force and minimize the factors that subtract from the delivered force. Maximize things like bullet weight and bullet velocity at the target. Minimize things like deformation of the bullet, area of target impacted by the bullet, and movement of the target when hit. Be sure to protect yourself from the possibility of ricochets.

My little brother used to work for an outfit called Advanced Composites. The produced this plastic for aerospace. He brought me some 6" round disks about 1/2" thick . The weighed about 2oz. I couldn't get a 30-06 round through one. Also he gave me a 3' long rod 1/2" diameter weighted next to nothing anbd I could do chinups on it. (I weighed about 300 at the time.) When you dropped it it sounded like a piece of steel hitting the ground. The company was a subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum. They had invested millions in getting certified for the aerospace industry and when they finally did . They closed it up and tried to sell the company. No buyers so they just junked the whole load. Then sold the manufacturing rights to some outfit in Japan or Malaysia

Whatever .30 you use, be sure to use an AP slug - or DU if you can find some (very hard to locate as a collectible loading). A standard SP or ball won't touch any serious plate.

Try one of those steel-core's in your brother's SKS. Make sure the target is up against something solid so that it can not move when hit.

Hmm....I wouldn't mind having a breastplate-style set of body armor made up from some of that 2 ounce composite...
