I just purchased a new ak-47,and am changing to thumbhole st and matching hand guards. The thing is the hand guards are stuck to 1gas tube, reciever they are wooden .What is the safest simplest way to remove them?

Put the upper handguard with gas tube base in a vice. grip the upper handguard wood and twist it 180 degrees until it comes out of the steel upper guard holder. On the lower handguard there is a little lever at the front (muzzle) end of the bottom handguard (on the barrel) that you must flip up to release the lower handguard. Slide the lower handguard off toward the muzzle. Do this after you have removed the upper handguard and gas port tube.

    Prokote,
Why would you ruin a perfectly good Ak with a nasty ole dragunov stock? Eww! Pistol grip is the only way to go!

Don't worry about the bullet with your name on it, worry about the fragmentation grenade addressed 'To Occupant'.

Supermonkey-The thumb hole stock has a smaller hole than a traditioal Dra'go'nov. I plan to strip and sand down the new hand guards and buttstock, then give them a triple soaking of my dark red cherry stain, and countless coats of chem-resistante alykd poly. I did the same to a Stevens bolt action mod52c 410 that was made around 1940,my dads 1st. years back. Almost as clean as The nicest new firearm.I love that color on firarms with wood parts! My ar-15 would look sweet with that type of combo, but I bet the stocks/handguard would cost as much as the darn rifle. later
