Mr Sterkel faces charges for detonating the explosive without a valid permit. There was no damage or injury but he could be punished with a prison sentence and a fine of $1,000 (?800).

When I was a kid anything that had potential explosive properties was used to experiment with. That was back in the days when the only person you had to deal with was Granny that would put a hurtin' on you if she caught you blowing something up. [:D]

It's amazing how far a D cell battery will shoot out of a water pipe of about the same diameter as the battery using a cherry bomb as the propellant on the capped end of the pipe that's leaning between the forks of a pear tree. [:D]

In my younger days, you could buy dynamite OTC. Use was at your discretion and hopefully, you survived the learning process.
Several years back, I was building fence for a young OIF veteran and the lunch talk turned to blowing stuff up. He had some pretty good stories about IED's and such but his face went a little white as I was telling about "blowing" drainage ditches. His comment was "Darned good thing the camel jockies didn't have that sort of experience".

I remember growing up as a teenager in the 1960's all our hardware stores had dynamite for sale. My friends father use to buy it quite offen to blowup stumps on his chicken ranch. It was kept in a locked red plywood box by the front door of the store so firemen could remove it quickly in case of a fire. Two of those stores did burn down. Then the hippie movement came along and radicals started blowing up stuff and made it harder to obtain dynamite. Back in the late 1970's i met a guy who only had one arm and was blind from a fishing accident using dynamite. He didn't throw it far enough away from himself before it went off. When i met him he and his father were restoring a 1958 Corvette.

My personal favorite were those insulated milk box's. Put a quart jar of gas (capped of course) then toss in a m80, close the lid and put a large rock on top of the lid. Best done a night time. I should be dead.

Reminds me when a group of us "kids" were watching highway crews "blow up stuff" and someone said,, wonder where the keep the dynamite?

Thus was born the reason why a speaker at H.S. graduation said:

Droptop passes on his experience with dynamite too Mark.

Blue powder.. There is the problem.

If it had been Pink or rainbow fairy dust and not a thing would have been said.

I have observed that people just naturally work faster when a lit M-80 is involved.

    Latest craze is "sparkler bombs"

Take 3 or 4 boxes of sparklers and tape them together really tight w/duct tape .. one sparkler sticking out the end of the taped ones.

Light it an run! It will make your ears hurt and split a 4" branch off a tree.

I tried that years ago when I first learned of it, to less than spectacular results.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

As a 10 year old country boy from Central Virginia you had to be pretty fast to escape poop falling on you from a cherry bomb placed in a cow patty.

A quarter stick thrown on top of a tent in the middle of the day with a young couple in it making out makes things get done quick. [;)][:D]. I was the thrower at the Harley Davidson outdoor party in New York State one year. Oh, the fun we had with dynamite back then.

    "us55840"

Did have a marble cannon .... drop a marble into a 3/4" water pipe and on the capped end, push a black cat firecracker into a hole with the fuse sticking out.

I built one just like that when I was about 13 or 14. Made a stock for it so I could hold it like a pistol. I shot it a the brick wall in our back yard, put a dent in it about 1/4".
