Two of them in the back of an AC-130 is even more fun. BTDT.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I remember the M42. Spent several unproductive days in the New Mexico desert north of Fort Bliss firing those. We didn't hit much of anything. They were obsolete in 1959, and could only track up to 600 mph. Much fun with those and the quad-50s.

They were also used as a flat-trajectory weapon, though we never trained for that.

We had the 2 barrel version of the Bofors, the M 42 Duster mentioned above in our larger firebases in Vietnam. They were impressive to watch.

One night we were attacked by a group of sappers and at least one mortar at a Firebase called The Oasis west of the 4th Div Base Camp Enari. We made it to the bunkers on the perimeter.

I could see the flash from their mortar tube way off in the distance, but I couldn't tell the range, so I just started firing up and down hoping some of my rounds might sail into their position.

Then the Duster pulled up next to our bunker and started shooting. Their rounds were tracers and we could watch them go into the spot where the mortar was. The incoming mortar shots stopped.

The old PG's (Patrol Gunboats not to be confused with PBR, River Patrol Boat) had 40mm on the fantail. They were replaced with 20mm in the late 1970s.

We had a Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate who when you disagreed with him offered to take you back to the 40 tub and reason with you.
The road to hell is paved with COMPROMISE.
