Got my non-resident permit today!!! I guess my little indiscretion in Albuquerque in 1958 wasn't the problem I was afraid it might be.

    Two hours of movies and lectures and then go to range and prove you can rapid fire (6) and hit your target. After you get your certificate you send it to Tallahasse and wait 90 days, and they will hold it uo for 90 days. License is good for five years and then you have to do it all over again. Oh yeah don't forget about the Fingerprints you have to provide from the Sheriffs Office ($5.).

    Wow, that's a quick course! In KY, we had to sit through four very boring hours of lecture and the dullest movie since "The Flintstones" Then we went to the range, and from a ridicules range of 21 feet, fire 20 rounds into the target. Only 10 of them had to actually hit the target. After the shootin' was done, we had to endure four more hours of entertaining stories of what not to do. Did you know that in Kentucky, it's against the law to shoot someone to prevent them from committing suicide? Go figure. Any way, you then ship all your docs to Frankfort. It only took about three weeks to get my "Flash Pak" back, and take to the Sherriff. He already had my permit ready to go. In KY, the permit cost $60.00 and is good for three years, then you cough up another $60.00 and your good for another three.

    In PA I paid $14. and gave the sheriff two passport photos. In two weeks I got a letter saying "I have found no reason not to give you a concealed weapons permit. You can pick up your license at my office anytime".

    There are only two places you can't carry a gun in PA.
    1. A Courthouse.
    2. Whithin 300' of School property.

    I got my CCW here in Fla about 6 years ago. Took the class, 2 hrs at a gunshow in Lakeland. When the calss was over we had filled out the forms, been photographed and fingerprinted. I just attached a check and sent it in. 90 days later - Viola - CCW. My friend just got his and he had to take the class and then go to the range and fire 1 round, then they signed off on the course and he sent it in.

    I went for mine in VA two weeks ago. I hadd to shoot 50 rounds and only had to be accurate with 25. I also had 4 hours of a class on hand guns and they had a lawyer come in and talk to us about the do's and do not's. I am still waiting to hear back. I have my fingers crossed.

    Hey RugerNiner where in PA did you get yours? I had a friend who applied in Philadelphia and it took like 90 days for him to get his back.

    Gotta love AL.

    Go to the Sheriff's Dept., wait 10 minutes while they run your background, pay $10, walk out with your permit. Renew yearly by mail for $10.

    WA State- Submit an application to the local Sheriff,along with $10.00 for fingerprints, $60.00 for the application. Wait 2-6 weeks, (immediate temp. licenses can be issued in certian cases, but only at the Sheriff's descretion) and as long as you have no criminal record of Felonies, Dom. Violence (DV of ANY type), or mental health issues, your permit is issued to you for 5 years, renewal is $45.00 for each 5 year period after that. WA is also a "Shall Issue state" meaning that the law is written that if you meet all of the application parameters, the Sheriff cannot deny you a permit.

    I feel that some sort of testing in the areas of range (Lead on target), safe handling, & storage should be in place, especially with the "shall issue" status of the state and the consequences of pulling the trigger. There is also no instruction on state law or instruction on when you are "legally protected" to exercise your right to bear arms.

    Azzeater...I got mine about 6 months ago. I went to my local range (trail glades range off tamiami trail and Krome Ave.) and paid one of the guys there $35. He is an NRA instructor and he gave me a very informal course. about 45 minutes of laws and a lesson on self defense. Shot a few rounds at 7 yards and he signed off on the course. Got my prints at the police dept, and filled out the forms. Took about 60 days for me to get mine.

    good for five years then you have to renew. cost was as follows

    $35 for the course
    $10 for finger prints.(larger PD's charge $5)
    $15 for two passport pictures, notarizing the application, and postage.
    $117 money order made out to florida dept of state for the application

    total $177

    Make sure you take your shooting test with an automatic, I read somewhere that if you do it with a revolver, that is what you can carry, but using the auto, you can carry either. Something stupid about the mechanics of each weapon.

    Lots of ways to do it in Fl.
    Not all require a range and class room.
    I filled out the app, wrote chec,k and sent them a copy of my NRA Instructors card.

    Classic made a good point. In florida, if you take the course and shoot with a revolver, then you can only carry a revolver. If you shoot with a pistol during the range session, then you can carry either.

    Also in the State of Florida, if you have military background, you dont need to take the courses.

    Where did this Revlover/Pistol thing come from. Not State of Fl Statute. 790.06

    3. Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, or the Department of State;
    4. Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
    5. Presents evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or military service;

    Hey Matt45: I like the Washington State concealed weapons permit process just fine the way it is. I've held one for over 20 years and I don't want to see it changed one bit. Screw a buncha range demonstrations, safe handling/storage classes and all the rest. It's been working just fine as is, and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

    I beleive that in Florida, when you take the course, it states on the papers, what kind of weapon you qualified with.

    It has been twenty yrs since I had mine, but I was at the local indoor range, when they were qualifying, and the Instructor said the same thing, "Use the automatic," so you can carry either, revolver or auto.

    In Florida the successful completion of an accredited hunter safety class is also an acceptable substitute for firearms training. Many people, prior to understanding the Florida statutes pertaining to CCW licensing, mistakingly believe that the licensing has something to do with the licensee's right to use a firearm. It does not, CCW licensing is only about the way a firearm may be carried. The use of the weapon is covered by other statutes. The mere display of a firearm (or alleged display) can cause a lot of problems for a CCW holder. I have had my license for years and plan to keep it, however I find myself actually carrying a concealed weapon less and less often as I contemplate the reality of an accidental or unintentional use/display of my weapon.
    Florida is one state that allows the concealed carry of multiple legal weapons. Great, if you are the Rambo type.

    OK! I followed up on my research, In Florida you can qualify with either a revolver or Auto, and carry either,

    It was the State of Texas that had the rule if you qualify with a revolver, that was all you could carry. Not sure if that rule is still in effect or not.
