What is best breed of dog for deer hunting

I have hunted deer for over 25 years and always used a beagle. I hunt in Eastern Ontario where it is a mix of open fields, woods, swamp land and your are always close to roads and highways. I run beagles because they have a good sound when tonguing, never run the deer to hard or into another county, better at getting through the thick under brush, not as high strung, no need for radio collars, and best of all you can have them as a house pet. So if there are any other deer hunters out there that can use dogs where they hunt which breed do you prefer to use?

I'd get one of them "red haired Blue-ticks all in the South"!! Probabably be a 4-legged tracking machine!!! (little humor if you listen to country music) We use Walker dogs and some real short legged beagles down here. Them beagles might not do to good up there in the frozen North!! GHD

Being originally from Missouri, we mainly used Beagles. For racoons we went with both Blue Ticks and Red Bones.

I think Blue Ticks are about as good as you can get but you can also use American Bulldogs.I know some people who use American Bulldogs for hg hunts and they love em.Dont have the nose thugh. But are big bodied strong and pretty intelligent also dont know what fear is.

Try one of the Cur species. I've dogged yotes with a friend in SD using Blackmouthed cur. Dogging yotes is a blast.

Got a buddy who uses a bluehealer for blood tracking only, Now thats a four legged tracking machine! Have to use collar or keep in sight it won't bark but will track deer only. If it gets away from you it will come back to find ya after it locates the deer.
I doubt it would work well for on the hoof type tracking, we never tried it so I can't truly say but a hound seems to be the likely choice there.

Same in California. The only thing you can legally do to your dog is dress him up in little pink outfits with diamond studded collars and give them weird haircuts.

Glad to see the good old beagle leading the pack when it comes to hunting. Too bad some states don't allow using dogs. It can be a lot of fun just listening to them tongue on a hot trail, trying to figure out which dog is leading the chase.
Some interesting choices, my neighbor has a Chihuahua. Maybe I should take him along this fall, and see what he can do............

English Coonhound or Treeing Walker Coonhound are the best in my book.

Us coonhunters have spent years trying to breed these hounds so they only chase * and nuthin else and you guys are using them for deer and other trash animals

It does sound like fun though

We have several packs, 35 dogs altogether, which will include Blue Ticks, Walkers, a couple of Red Bones and the taller Beagle. Nothing brings on the adrenelen flow like a pack of deer dogs coming in your direction during the Virginia deer season.

Can't use dogs here but my labs have cut into chase on few deer out by our house. They never come back with anything. Now turkey, that's different.

I have no idea how one hunts deer with dogs, having never done it or talked with anyonje who had. FYI, I am a major deer/elk hunter but I do the hunting myself i.e. scouting, stalking etc... Explain how hound hunting for deer works because to this ignorant person it sounds more like "deer shooting" than hunting, if the dogs do all the work.

I'd sure be willing to try it and see how fun it is. I just have zero knowledge on the subject.

LT- it's not a way of hunting deer- its a way to hunt private or otherwise posted land without gaining permission.
see, what I watched in North Carolina this bubba went up to a house and asked an elderly lady for permission to hunt- it was denied.
he walks back out to his pickumup truck, grabs his little motorola walkabout radio, calls the boys, they show up, turn the dogs out couple boys drive roads around the back side of property and everyone sits and waits for the dogs to run the deer across the road, where they are promptly shot. Law is called, but alas, dogs cannot be ticketed for trespassing, and fat bubba's sittin in his pickup on the road, waiting for his 'lost' dog to return. Private property owners in this country take enough crap from the gov- dogs help them to be f***ed by the welfare crowd and minimun wagers who will never own prop. themselves.
I'm sure I'll be called every name Nunn will let slide, and I'll hear all the benifits of dogs for deer- but around here- if a dog runs a deer past us, the deer walks and the dog dies.- Ralph

BEAGLES FOR HEAVY UNDERBRUSH AND EITHER WALKER OR WALKER/BEAGLE MIX FOR SWAMP HUNTING. THE SWAMP WATER USUALLY IS MORE THAN THE BEAGLE CAN HANDLE DUE TO ITS SHORTER LEGS. A WALKER WILL STAY WITH THAT OLD BUCK IN THAT SWAMP TIL HE GETS HIM UP AND OUT.

Its called the flush out.Just make sure your dogs comes when you call him aor youll be tracking him as hard as a deer. Its nt as sporting as traditioal stalking but you can get some good deer and its better than going home to a empty freezer.

Thats why I say American Bulldogs can be used.I have seen bucks want to fight not run and American Bulldogs will give him all the fight he can handle and they are extremely obedient. They come the first time you holler. They are the best for pigs for the same reason as deer if one wants a fight a American Bulldog will give him one.I have a couple of buddies who hunt with a pack of 4 and not one of them is under 150 pounds. One of them locked up with my Pit Bull Clyde one time anad it was a fight to see even though Clyde finally took him he would still have enough for any hog or deer.My pit clyde is a soldier I havent seen him lose once.He weighs 140 pounds which is unheard of for a pit.But I love him to much to let him go after hogs he might end up biting off more than he could chew. One at a time he could tear up all of them but he wouldnt stand a chance against the whole pack.

In PA if you let a dog run deer the dog is open game, anyone can and will shoot it. It states right in the game law book that it is LEGAL to shoot dogs for running deer and the shooter is only required to notify the owner of the dog or a game warden that the dog was shot and the warden will then fine the crap out of the dog owner. If you want to run deer, do like we do for shooting does, get about 15-30 guys together, set up some shooters and go to work, if it is done right the walkers and the shooters get deer. Gets kinda scary sometimes when the magnumitus gangs gets to shooting.

Someone above posted that you can't use a dog for deer in Ca. Wrong. Each hunter in the party can be accompanied by 1 dog. It is very rare to see anyone hunting with dogs here though. I use a fox terrier. Small dog without much stamina. Really helpful in heavy cover where a deer might bed down and let you slip past while still hunting. If the wind is right the dog will smell it and jump it up. The good thing about the Fox Terrier is that usually it will only stay with the deer for 50 to 100 yds then come back looking for your approval of a job well done. You really have to change your technique when hunting with them though. When normally a head wind is in your favor, with a dog it isn't. The dog will smell the deer well ahead of you seeing it. The dog will get out ahead and * it before you get a chance. Hunting in a cross wind is almost always best so usually you end up hunting side hill. A lone hunter with a single dog isn't doing that much to improve his odds, but when you knock one down in thick cover a dog will find it right away. We all make one shot kills every time so wounding never happens, but if it does, a dog will let you know where that buck went every time. And everything is out the window when a dog gets the smell of blood, they will let you know right where your deer is hiding out and won't leave it until you get there. Also when the big one gets away it's that Darn dog's fault, and when you bring home a Bruiser of course it was your skill as a nimrod that brought it home.

Common Sense is an Uncommon Virtue.

The use of Dogs while whitetail hunting in Illinois will land you in Jail. As I am not 100% sure how Deer Hunting with a dog(s) actually works, please enlighten me. I assume the dogs are trained to run the deer back toward your location right ???? Sorry to be so ignorant, but I really have never experienced this type of hunting....
    Thanks..

In West Virginia its illegal to hunt with dogs, but I believe it is also illegal to shoot dogs for running deer. I have never tried hunting deer with a dog and will not pass judgement on those who do. Personally I prefer to hunt deer by myself putting my ability to stalk and conceal myself against nature and I almost allways win anyway so why would I want to use a dog. Maybe if the dog would set on my feet and keep them warm without moving around and scratching himself, but it would be a * teaching it to climb into my stand.lol...

If you have ever been in a S.C. lowcountry swamp it would be clear why hounds are used.Beagles are to move deer slow and Walkers or July hounds move them fast, but I have seen every thing from Cocker Spainels to Airdales and all sort of mixes used pretty with good sucess.

Could not do that in Pa. But I would surely use my lil Itchy Itch * from the great state of MO.
Now my hunting buddy has a Rodision Ridgeback and those dogs make one heck of a big kitty cat hunter.

Last night when I got home from work, I took my Boxer out in the field behind my house to let him run. Once we entered the field I noticed his ears purk up and his gaze focused on a white pidgeon about fourty yards away from us. I told him "get it boy", and off he went like a bat outa hell after it. It must have been facing away from us because he was almost on top of it before it took flite. It got about three feet off the ground when my dog jumped and caught the damb thing between his paws and jaws. It was unbelievable, then he started playing with it and prancing around so proud of his accomplishment. I can certainly understand why the germans used them for couriers and guard dogs as they are both agile and powerful. I bet hed reck a groundhogs day if he had the chance too.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....
