Any body know where Carthage or Kempville Tennessee is? I have to attend a wedding there and was wondering 3 things: Is it close to a small hotel?, Is there any open land to camp/hunt? If i stay on private property can i hunt small game, and What kind of gear do i need this time of year? I have just a dog maybe two, a shotgun and 22 mag. on my list so far, plus other crap. If i stay a week can i hunt every day or is it canned beans for this kid? Thank you, info is always appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey all!

Carthage is right off I-40 app. halfway between Nashville and Cookville. BTW...Carthage is the hometown of Al Gore. Good luck!

azzeater....I hope it's not your own wedding you're going to. If it is, you better not go hunting right after the ceremony. I made the mistake of going deep sea fishing the morning after I got married. Women hold grudges. Mine has held this over me for 30 years. I remind her that I took her home before I took off. Doesn't help.

Carthage is about 4 miles north of I-40, approx 1 hour east of Nashville (exit 258) and is about 3500 folks. Kempville is about 1 mile south of the same I-40 exit. VERY small community (150-200?). At that exit is now a Best Western motel, about 4 years old, probably pretty nice, also a McDonalds and quik stores, and another restaurant (Timberlake?). Not bad. There is a motel in Catrhage called the Cordell Hull Motel (615-735-1300), but it's not all that great. Lebanon TN is only 20 minutes towards Nashville and has all kinds of motels and feed spots. May be the best choice. Cookeville is the other way about 40 minutes.

If you want to camp, check the US Army Corp of Engineers site for camping locations on Cordell Hull Lake, a few miles north of Carthage, or try 615-735-1034. There are some nice sites for campers (hookups) upstream of the dam, but I assume you can rough it too if the Corp says ok. Remember, it's summertime in TN. It's hot and sticky. Shooting may not a big prob...depending on the landlords. Smith County is full of good folks...Gore is the exception.

When i was there (North Main Street) I had a groundhog problem. Went to see the sheriff and explained my dilemma and he said "Why don't you just shoot him?" Assuming the sheriff was smoking crack, I went across town to the police dept and posed my question, and was responded with, "Well, I'd just shoot him."

Carthage is cool! Enjoy your stay. Dave

Thanks for the info guys! My father is getting re-married and has 40 acres in/near Kempville, it has a carthage zipcode, that's why I asked about Carthage. I think that i might stay on his property and grab a hotel the night before so i can clean up and put a suit on. His property does not have a home on it as he lives out of state so i think that i'll be camping there and wanted to hit some rabbits and fish a little. Thanks again!
