Plastic Gas Containers(Cans) Price to Triple in 09

edited August 2009 in General Discussion
I was told this by my local small motors dealer yesterday. His distributor told him that starting in 2009 the Govt. is going to require the companies that currently make the plastic gas containers(cans is what we call them in the south) to use a plastic resin that will reduce the amount of chemicals that can be absorbed into the plastic from fuel and this new resin is much more expensive than the current resin. He told me that the normal 5 gallon unit you buy at WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, etc. that now cost $6-$8 bucks will cost $20-$30 per unit. He had no reason to lie about it bacause I was not there buying a gas can, I was ther picking up my chain saw... It might not be true but I thought I would share this piece of information in case in your December trip to the local hardware store might want/need to include one or two more gas containers. I went to WalMart and bought 3 extra at a cost of $5.84 per unit....

Keep in Mind - We might not see this price increase on Jan 1 because the old units are being sold. He indicated that they had to start producing this new style unit starting Jan. 1 so we might not see the increase until Feb or March at the stores..

I have enough gas cans to store over a hundred gallons of gasoline. That may sound like a lot, but if you have ever lived off a generator for 26 days, you know how scarce fuel can get.

I have a shed, just for my gas cans, not wanting to store that much fuel in my house, or shop.

    I think I'm good.

    Thanks for the info!

I got 3 little ones, but I think I'll get that ten gallon one with the wheels, from the auto supply store. I've been wanting for a while.

Company I work for quit making gas cans years ago because of the liability insurance they had to carry.

At a recent drag race they were giving out red cans made by JAZ that were marked "water". Something about liability associated with making gas jugs. Rep that was passing them out remarked that the company had to call them water jugs, but the owners could store whatever they wanted in them.

Funny how the same jugs were marked gasoline for years???

Well - Not trying to bump this topic back up to the top but today as my wife was shopping at J C Penny I went into the ACE Hardware store next door. The 5 gallon plastic gas containers were $ 18.99 each. The Manager told me this was a brand new shipment they just received with the new special spill proof top and made from the new resin plastic. So anyone that needs gas containers made of plastic the time is now to get the containers you need. My dad was at Sams Wholesale today and saw 6 gallon plastic containers there but did not buy any and did not remember the price.....

I work for a power equipment dealer, and haven't heard of a government mandate (doesn't mean there isn't one).

We sell the cheap plastic cans, one of the most popular being a can with dual compartments, one for bar oil, and one for mixed gas.

We also sell, under the Honda brand name 1 1/4, 2 1/2, and 5 gal. no-spill cans, also a 5 gal diesel can. These go for (about) $16.99, $19.99, and $29.99. They are also available under their own brand name. We sell many more of these than we do the cheap ones. They are a more finished, better made product, and the spout/valve virtually eliminates spillage. I don't know if the plastic has any special composition.

Most of our customers are landscape professionals, loggers, and govermental agencies. We've been selling them for at least 3 years. Price has gone up, but not by much.

    edit: this may be helpful.

Some of the guys at work laugh at me because I'm a scavenger. But I've got about 1/2 dozen 5 gallon gas containers in my shed. All picked up off the side of the hwy.
No one was laughing when the company said they would no longer provide rubber "bunjie" straps for us. And I brought in sack full for the guys to use. All picked up off the hwy. And when times comes I can take in another sack full and still have plenty for my uses.
During Thanksgiving the wife said she needed a board. I went to the shed and got out a 12' 1x12 that I picked up 2 years ago. And cut it to size for her.
I won't worry the prices of new ones. I'll just pick up the lost ones that most folks drive by.

Started in California by C.A.R.B. Permeatation & Evaporation are the buzz words.

Gas does leak thru many plastics, will cause condensation, and many cans are safety hazards if knocked/fall over and poor pouring designs.

New cans will need to be more spill proof if knocked over, and have shut off nozzles.

GOOD ideas for safety, and convience.

Try the new NO Spill that has an easy to push button to start flow, and automaticlly shuts off when full. Square shaped, rounded corners makes it stronger, and a low profile wide bottom for stability.

Yea seriously, sounds like they are just mandating a higher standard of quality, which isn't a bad thing. I mean seriously if there weren't any regulation, that chinese made gas can you bought at walmart would probably melt as soon as you tried to fill it... but it would only cost you $2 a unit ;)

You might want to try out using the no-spill fuel can. It's easy on the budget and really useful.

All the available cans here have spring-loaded spouts. You have to mash the spout hard against the filler neck to get the gas out. Doesn't work well with lightweight equipment.

When I found this out, I also found out the old style cans were still available in Oklahoma, and one of our good members here was good enough to pick me up a few and bring them by when he was coming this way.

I did manage to buy locally a "KEROSENE" marked can with the old-old-style vent and spout. Seems the spout rule applied to "GASOLINE" cans only.

Good G.I cans are no more going away too. The new ones have a spring loaded spout and cost double what the old ones did. I have been trying to order the old style spouts for a mouth and can not get them either.

Thats the problem right there--few people know the power of C.A.R.B. aka California Air Resource Board. That organization can an has set policy concerning so many things from gas cans to catalytic converters without ANY public hearings on the matter. They go above and way beyond what the EPA requires. They are the equivalent of a Dictator. Go see what a new cat converter will cost ya to have put on now compared to a year ago[;)] The problem with them is that OTHER state follow their lead--I hear TX and here in WA are next to follow their smog guidelines.

I have about 14-16 5-gallon and 4-5 2 gallon plastic ones i bought during the "summer of the hurricanes".21 days on a gen. will make u buy cans.
Since then, all the major gas stations have installed gen.sets.The fuel should flow, as soon as the trucks can roll.

    Got a 5000 litre underground plastic-tank for the house and a home-dieselstand.

Plus, with 119km of road in the entire city and the fact that you can't drive from city to city - I guess I'm covered.

Nah, got 4 jerrycans topped off in the shed.
    That's it.

A tankfull of diesel will last me 3 weeks and I'm on district heating.
