Need advice on 458 Win Mag loads...

I have been contemplating getting a mold to cast bullets for my 458 Win Mag, but I need advice from the shooters familiar with this round, as to which weight bullet I should be looking at getting. I believe it would be best if I was to get something over 400 grains. I prefer something around 500 grains, as I believe since I'm relying on the heavy bullet moving at a low velocity it would be best to have the heaviest bullet possible. I also have no intention of shooting the bullet I choose anywhere close to a full power load, as I've done that already, and it wasnt fun. I dont intend on hunting a lot with this cartridge, or target shooting, I just want to shoot it and enjoy its power, with the knowledge it wont kill me, but it will be ready to kill anything appropriate to the caliber. Anyone having experience with this cartridge please feel free to respond with any advice on the heavier lead bullet designs, preference of mold designs, manufacturers, gas check designs, nose designs, anything pertinent. I will also be looking for a good used mold once I've decided which one to go with, so if you have any collecting dust, see if you can find them, and shoot me an email with what you have, thank you, Ryan.

Ryan, see if you can't find the 535 or 550 grain bullet that Randy Garrett uses in his 45-70 loads. Maybe Beartooth Bullets or Cast Performance bullets have something this heavy. I used to shoot Hornady 500 grain in my 450 Ackley, never tried cast bullets in it. My 45-70's have never had a jacketed bullet through their barrels except at the factory nmaybe. There is a good selection of cast bullets in the 400 to 450 grain range running around. I have 1 box of Beartooth Bullets WLN 400 grain plain base bullets here if you want them. Think you would be better off shooting gas checked bullets through the 458 though

    Allen,
Thanks for the pointers about the bullet weights and where to look, I was hoping you'd give me your opinion since you shoot a lot of the heavy weights. I also think I should be shooting the GC bullet base, even though I'm not a fan of the extra step, its not like its difficult or time consuming. Hopefully I'll get more responses from shooters with a preference for certain designs of molds, hint hint to everyone who hasnt replyed yet

One advice might be, with the 458WinMag....

Hold it damn close to your shoulder when firing =o)

only tried the 458H&H Mag a few times, factory loads though. (don't recall the weight of them)
then the * told me, that i could lay down too, to shoot it - when the tears stopped flowing 30secs later - i gave him his rifle back and just shot my 12 gauge instead.
i'll never trust him again !!!! not with big-bore. (yes, i knew they weren't fun to shoot with, laying down... but he said it'd be okay... hehe)

PS : A 458H&H Mag once shot straight through the "Bulletproof" glass in a military vehicle.
the manufacturer said that there would be no risk of a bullet going through the glass with any common hunters rifle - a friend of mine, a dealer, grabbed a 458H&HMag and standard factory load bullets.
went straight through both sidewindows, and another shot went through the windshield, but was reflected downwards into the trunk and straight through it into the ground by the rearwindow.

I love my silenced .22 Anshutz rifle =o) And soon to be Steyr Scout with 10-round ext-set. ;o_
