Build a boom sprayer question..........?

I need to build a boom sprayer to spray insecticide on my yard. Plan on hooking it to my little yard trailer and pull with the mower. I have most of the material to make one. Just curious if anyone knows if a high volume electric fuel pump (left over from my hot rod days) will work with the water/insecticide mix?
Fleas and bugs in general are terrible this year.

I don't think it will work out to good. I don't think you will have enough volume to make it spray a good spray, but that depends on how many nozzles you intend to run. Even a high volume gasoline pump is only around 80 gallons an hour, and if it's a pump for a carburated engine it will only make about 7psi, which I think will be dissapointing.

If it was me I might go ahead and make the thing and try it, and if it didn't work out I would order a pump from Northern Tool.

Or make a sealed tank that can be pressurized by an air compressor and get a 12 volt one to hook up to it and keep it running.

you will need about 30psi for tip to work right if you are using like a tee jet 8002/8004 flat fan type tip....go to your farm and ranch supply store that would sell lawn type sprayers and buy a 12 pump designed for this type of use......last i knew they was around 100.00 dollars or so
about as cheap to buy one built already.

guess on northerntools they are about 60.00.....flat fan type tips you need to have then about 2ft above ground to cover good....or if lower you would need to use a flood jet type tip

Thanks guys. I was thinking the psi at the tips might not be enough. I may look around and buy one.[:(] But I am tired of spraying with my 2 gallon unit. It takes about 15-20 mixes to spray my yard. Of course, I do need the exercise.[:D]

I don't think a pump designed for fuel would work with most chemicals. Most sprayer pumps are made of anticorrosion synthetic material and have chemical resistant seals. Some chemicals will cause regular o-rings to swell up like you won't believe. One other thing to consider is whether you can maintain an even and accurate speed while spraying. I spray hundreds of acres with a 6x6 atv with a mounted sprayer in the box each year. My son uses a smaller atv with a 15 gallon tank and a 3 nozzle boom on his yard and his biggest problem is overapplication from inaccurate speed control.

Bought one from Tractor Supply about 4 years ago. It has a wand, which I use for poison ivy on trees, but also a folding boom. Didn't cost much. Check them out.
It's too late for me, save yourself.

Thanks everyone. Just ordered a spot sprayer, with wand, from Northern Tool. It is adaptable to a boom, so I can I can make one and change it over when needed. cowdoc was right, just as economical (cheap) to buy one.
