EDMOND -- The police department was evacuated Thursday when a man brought in some old ammunition to be destroyed.
Tommy White, 52, of Edmond took two 40 mm rounds and one 20 mm round to the Edmond Police Department, 23 E First, at about 6 p.m. Thursday, according to a police report.

White said he got the ammunition, which was used in World War II, at a garage sale "a long time ago" and recently found it when he cleaned out his garage, said Glynda Chu, police spokeswoman.

The department's dispatcher took the ammunition from White and gave it to Sgt. Scott Fees, a member of the department's bomb squad.

Fees noticed that some of the rounds were live and called for the evacuation of the building.

The bomb squad took the ammunition in a bomb trailer to the department's bomb range on Danforth east of Midwest Boulevard and discharged it.

Chu said she encourages residents who think they might have an explosive to call the police department at 359-4466 and someone will come and pick it up.

My initial reaction was to yell, "WEENIES!"

But then I realized that they probably have a policy for such things, just as my PD does.

For found/seized/turned in ammunition, we are allowed to receive it and dispose of it, only up through the .50 BMG. Anything bigger, which might have an explosive charge, must be handled by specialists.
