Sometimes when you hear a shot from a rifle from a good distance, you hear a "crack", then a "pop" a half a second apart. What is making the second sound?

That second pop might be the bullet hitting it's target. I like to shoot steel plates at 400 and 500 yds so I can here that metal on metal "ting".

I know when you hear that in the marsh its the bullet hitting the deer. but only when the animal is at 150\200yards or more........or hitting something else hard......like a tree........

Well, the title on this post sure fooled me !

Though it was "Stop, hey what's that sound - everybody look what's goin' round" (from "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.
