Deadeye, I think we should have not let them know that we know each other yet, we could have had some real fun with this if we woulda sat back and not let them know.

Now some of you think it is impossible to kill deer with a small gun, just because you need a howitzer to kill a little deer, doesnt mean the rest of us do. Have you ever seen the hole in a deer made by a small bullet? probably not. A 55 grain balistic tip traveling at 3000+ fps will do more damage than a popular round nose .30 180 grainer traveleing at normal speeds produced by a 30-06.

deadeye.........Are you going to answer the other have of the question? How many did you not find with the .223?????

Before I past judgment what do you do with 20 deer.

I killed four last season. And gave a bunch away and still cooking them. Cooked some yesterday.....I could have kill 30\40 deer. You don't judge a hunter or sportsman by numbers........

    Lets see:
one mature deer, 75 lbs of wrapped meat. 75lbs x 20 deer = 1500 lbs.

If ya eat it every other day all year long or three times a week(156 times) Thats 9.6 lbs per cooking...........

7mm nut here are the spec on .223 with a 55grain nozzler bal tip at 3600fps muzzle 1439ft lbs
    100yds 1103ft lbs
    200yds 839ftlbs 300yds 628ft lbs
    400yds 461ft lbs
    500yds 332ft lbs
    600yds 236ft lbs
dont get me wrong i have nothing against the .223 as i have one and like it very well, but its just not a deer cartridge here in my area where a 400-500 yds shot is more the norm.
I dont think anybody has said a .223 wouldnt kill a deer, but to be a good clean kill it would be at close range. I have seen people here use a .223 on deer here and end up having to chase the deer 2-3 miles with a pickup to get them killed. not a good deal.
In fact if you showed up to my place to hunt deer with a .223 i would make you put it back and get a bigger gun or you would'nt get to hunt my place.
    doc

I dont give my guns without somebody getting hurt!

Deadeye, he will not believe you on that .223 question so I wouldnt even bother. Sounds like one of those guys who think it will not kill. I can honestly say I have lost more deer using the 7mm and 30-06 than I have ever lost with ANY .22 caliber gun, rimfire or center.

As far as the number of deer and what they get used for, we fill more than our own freezers, we share. Also a good bit of it gets made into bologna and is shared. it's nothing for us to take 2-3 deer at a time and make bologna or anything else out of it. We live in an area where some of the hunting practices here are normal but to outsiders they are not. You have hunting practices down there in the bayou that make us cringe, do you know what happens to dogs up here that run deer? Do you know how we feel about that? You don't like us using a .22 caliber to kill and we don't like you using dogs. It is 100% legal here to shoot ANY dog running deer, and we do it. I don't care if it is a prized show dog worth a million bucks, run a deer and it dies. The same with bears, there are alot of places that use dogs for bears, up here we call that inhumane and more puppy dogs have been shot in the woods for chasing big game that I care to think about. I know you do not like a .223, you and I have had this disscussion before, but I now what I can do with a little gun, and believe me when I say this, the only deer that me or deadeye have lost with a .223 was missed completly. We take our huntin very serious, we take our shootin serious, and not to brag, but we are good at what we do.

1 buck and if you want to send to the counties that have extra doe tags, it is unlimited. During the summer you can hunt red tag season and you can legally kill one deer on each farm in the program, if you want to run all over the state you can kill over a hundred deer in a summer, legally.

well 4 wheeler in pa you can legally take 1 deer per tag...to answer your question....but now you can draw 3 state tags for the regular deer season ...but here we have a season that runs from feburary toseptember 28 and it is a farm control deal..on this program you are allowed to shoot 1 deer per farm enlisted in the program..so if there are 50 farms you can legally shoot 50 deer in that year just in this program..

oh im sorry have to answer the other part of they question for ya ....never had any deer get away that i hit i would say that 99% of them fell in thier tracks..and no only had to shoot all of them 1 time to kill them..so there is your answer and i eat deer meat every day because its my way of life..me and my family of 3 total people prefer deer meat over beef or pork any day..and we can eat 10 deer real easy over a years time..

7mm...........I do not hunt deer with dogs here in the bayou.......
If you and deadeye give several deer away thats great......It sounds like yall can shoot those .223.......You must admit with such a small cal. its all about bullet placement.........My beef with this topic is folk reading will grab their .223 and go deer hunting and can't put five out of five in a big four inch circle at 200 yards.......These folk have other larger guns in their home but "think" they can use their .223.........when they shouldn't.....
I have a .223 for varmin hunting and if a whitetail presented a shot while it was in my arms, I would kill him...................

What the hell is deer bologna ?

Deer bologna (ring or any)is awesome and I would use a 223 if I could and I had one, but I have to seetle for a shotgun, muzzle loader, bow or a certain handgun caliber. No rifles, dogs, lights or long seasons.

(If it was legal I would shoot my 30-40 Krag).

ok every-one cool out.HUNTERS AND SPORTSMEN WE KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO NOT TAKE THAT SHOT .IF YOU CANNOT MAKE A CLEAN KILL DONOT SHOOT BE IT A .223 OR A .375 MAG.IF YOU ARE HUNTING AND SEE THAT B&C RECORD QUARTERING TOWARD YOU IN THE WOODS(UNDERBRUSH)AT 150-200 YARDS PLAIN AND SIMPLE IF YOU HAVE A .223 YOU MUST PASS ON THE SHOT A .223 CAN BE DEFLECKED? BY THE SMALLEST TWIG. CARRY WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO MAKE A CLEAN ONE SHOT KILL. IN THE MIDWEST THEIR ALOT OF BETTER CALS TO HUNT WITH. FACT I HUNT WITH A .308 MOSTLY PUT SOMETIMES I USE A PISTOL IN .357- SMALL AND I HAVE TO PASS ON ALOT OF SHOTS BUT I MAKE THAT CHOICE AND IF THAT RECORD WALKS OUT AT 100 YARDS I WOULD KICK MYSELF IN THE * SO I ONLY PISTOL HUNT AFTER I HAVE FILLED MY BUCK TAG THINK THINK THINK. IN THE WIDE OPEN FIELDS A .223 IN THE RIGHT HANDS ARE DEADLY WITH LIMITS YOU MUST KNOW THEM SPORTSMEN

I have shot two deer with a .223 (AR-15). They both ran about 25 yards and that is where I picked them up. The bullet was Rem. 55 gn. soft point, core-lokt. That was years ago, right after I
bought my first AR-15. Personally, my deer rifle is a Rem. 700 in .270, with my loads using 130 gn. Nosler Partitions or Rem. core-lokts. If someone is confident/experienced enough to use the .223 on deer, HAVE AT IT. Seems I read something a long time ago about "a well placed shot".......

7mm would you really shoot someones dogs for running deer i'm not trying to start an argument but here in la if you shot someone's dog they would more than likley shoot you. I could not even think of shooting another persons dog unless it was attacking me i would think the humane socity would put you in jail for that also it would be willful destruction of someone's property, Iknow that a lot of guys don't think it's fair to use dogs on bear, deer,or hogs but are more than willing to use them on quail, pheasants, squirrl,*,etc. i guess it is all in how you were brought up

you can be king or street sweeper but everyone is going to dance with the reaper

it is 100% legal in this state to shoot dogs for running deer, the humane society cannot say one word about it. All you have to do is shoot the dog and either tell the owner or the GC. I will find my hunting reg book and scan the page that has that info, I usually use the book for toilet paper but since we have 3 licensed hunters, soon to be 4 in this house I know for sure atleast one book is still here.

When dogs run deer they will run it untill it is dead or totally defenseless, it is the same with bears. A dog will run a deer just like a coyote and state law says big game animals in this state come before Fido. And yes I have shot one, when I finally caught that mutt running deer it was a relief, I didnt like that dog, or its owner so shooting it was easy.

I know this sounds cruel and I can hear the dog owners yelling already. Deadeye will back me on this, I will shoot my own dog for running deer and never think twice about it. As much as he loves his Chocolate labs, I'm pretty sure if one of them gets after a deer it will not like what happens.

If one one my coonhounds ever run deer or rabbits or any other trash animals they are hsitory. Try to eliminate that out of the bloodline is the best thing to do. Nothing like chasing a hound for a few miles in deep snow in the middle of the night only to find out it was a deer. Give the dog a bullet and improve the gene pool.

Of course there are states where they use hounds to hunt deer and i am sure it is a different story there.

223 is more than adequate for white tail, granted you arent gonna be able to shoot it in the rear and kill it like you can a 300 mag. but if you are a decent shot and can hit it in the right place youll drop it where it stands. Ive killed white tail with a 22 cal single shot before. One well placed shot right at the base of the ear and plop. Fell right in the middle of granny's bean patch.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

Hullo? Is there a discussion going on? *rubs eyes sleepily*

I'm not going to get into a pissing match over it, but I will echo what others before me have basically said.

Why take the chance that the poor beastie will be grotesquely wounded and run off somewhere to die?

It all comes down to "supposes" for me: I suppose you could kill a rampaging bull elk with a .22 Short. I suppose you could kill a deer with a pellet gun. I suppose you could kill an African elephant with a rusty butter knife, buttttt.....

    Why would you want to?

Just take the bigger round, drop the animal where it stands, and feel proud that you got it.
