I pitched this scenario to some people before 9/11,and they told me I was nuts!
Al-Queda and other terrorist groups learned a lot from those two yahoos in North Hollywood.

I've been to Catalina, and it is a nice day trip from the mainland. You can get there via a boat or a seaplane. The harbor is postcard picture perfect, even though the beach is the size of a postage stamp. But it's fun to walk the boardwalk and have snacks and drinks in the shops along the way. You can also bicycle or take tours inland, and the old Wrigley house is on a hill overlooking the harbor, and a large white public auditorium at the opposite end. It is unlikely that an Al-Qaeda ship could dock anywhere on its shores undetected, let alone "occupy" the island. If they have any plans of starting anything from there I think they are in for a big surprise. Still, I'm glad to know the threat is being taken seriously, because in a free society we would be vulnerable wherever we were not on alert.

This story has been kicking around for a while, and something like it was one of the scenarios I was thinking about as being likely. But I think they'll wait until September to pull a stunt (if they do), because people will be back to work, school, etc. where their movements are more predictable as targets. I'm not counting random nuts like the LAX guy, who by definition could stike anytime, anywhere.
