What makes a magnum round?

I read somewhere that anything that busts at 40,000 psi is considered a magnum is this true?I ask because of the .357SIG the artcle I read said it is considered a magnum because of the pressure at which it busts.I know that the title .357magnum is already taken but if it is a magnum round than why not find some way to name it as such I feel it would bring more sales if it had been plainly labeled magnum.

Don't think PSI has anything to do with being a Magnum. Some of the first Magnums did not exceed 30-35,000 PSI. The 308 Winchester exceeds 52,000 PSI and is not considered a Magnum. A Magnum supposedly launches a heavier bullet at higher velocities than a standard cartridge of same caliber. Also had read something years ago about foot pounds of energy needed to qualify as a Magnum, don't know.

in magnum rounds, the caliber is designated first, IE .357 mag, .41 mag, .32 mag.

The first magnum round was made at the request of police, they needed a round with more "PUNCH" so a fellow named Scharpe, made the first .357 magnum round, went to winchester to have it produced and then to Smith and Wesson to have the revolver made, the first Magnum revolver and Magnum round on the market was in 1935

The 375 H&H Magnum came about in 1912. There was also a 450/400 Magnum Express cartridge in 1890. You never did say wether you were just talking about handgun cartridges or all cartridges that were considered Magnums.

I looked up the invention of the magnum round for hand guns only, and found the info I posted, also the magnum round according to the info I got was a .38 cal made a bit longer to hold more propellant, IE, you can shoot a ,38 special in a 357, but cant shoot the .357 in a 38 special

The ONLY thing that makes a magnum round a magnum is the gun writers and the company in charge of nameing the round, the company that makes it. This sounds like a smart * answer, but I swear its the truth. You can find a magnum designation on nearly every diameter bullet from .22 to the biggest of them up through the .50. Its anyone's guess what makes a magnum a magnum. My theory is still simple, its just the writers, and the manufacturers, nothing scientific behind it at all.

greetings, classic' the first ammo for the magnum came from remington. it was made for the pre-m27 s&w revolver and was 1/10 inch longer than the 38 spl cart. i don't remember the year but it seems like 1935. magnum comes from the latin magna meaning great( big in english). respt submitted dads-freehold
