Re: Voters show American pride, Sept. 13 letter.

Editor: As a constitutionalist, I wish letter writer Bill Bunting could explain where in the Second Amendment there is a provision for the possession of handguns.

Let me quote all 27 words of the amendment. "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to bear arms, shall not be infringed." The Second Amendment was part of the the Bill of Rights that was adopted on Dec. 15, 1791, because at that time we were a new nation with weak armed forces. Every able bodied man was subject to draft into the militia. When drafted that militia man had to provide his own weapon, which at that time was the long-barreled rifle.

We now have the mightiest armed forces in the world and every state has its militia (National Guard). We no longer have the draft. Because of the above facts the Second Amendment is now obsolete, in my opinion.

I do not object to the legitimate possession of legal weapons. I do object to using the Second Amendment as a crutch for the possession of those weapons.

I am a combat wounded veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. I have seen enough death and destruction in my lifetime, that I will not permit a weapon of any kind in my household.

His problem is that he only sees the need for weapons of war after war has broken out. He fails to understand the security provided by an armed populace against civil strife, natural disaster, and all kinds of unpredictabilities. Not to mention the fact that deciding an article of the Bill of Rights is obsolete is precisely what the Bill was written to PREVENT.

greetings, good comments on this post , i esp. like offer'r observation that someone thinking or even a majority thinking a right is obsolete is the whole reason for a right. further the bill of rights only recognizes that right it doesn't grant them . respt submitted dads-freeehold

Headed down to the store to pick up another one of those "lawful" items and to support the 2nd amendment...
Somebody has to make up for people like that, who will be the first to come knocking on your door if trouble breaks out.

Offeror brought up a good point...mentioning natural disasters. I remember during hurricane Andrew, a lot of people were being looted in Homestead and Florida City. If it weren't for these people being able to defend themselves and what was left of their homes...it would have been a much bigger problem.

people were desperate during those times...they would try and get the supplies they needed by any means necessary. Just because somoene is not smart enough to prepare for a disaster beforehand is no excuse to steal it from someone who was.

    Right on pikeal1,
In 1979 after hurricane Freadrick hit Mobile, the Govenor had to declare marshall law, and a curfew because the looting was so bad.

He's just old and narrow-minded, and he doesn't understand the constitution.
As a matter of fact, the Constitution DOES give us the right to pack a pistol, but here I'm just preaching to the chior, Right?
If you don't know your rights, you dont't have any
