A really good friend of mine stopped by a little while ago to talk about his first gun with me.He hardly ever shoots but he has before. He likes to rattle my cage abit sometimes so when I suggested a gun to him he said aw you crazy what do I want that thing for but he is a good guy and a damn good friend. So I told him I would put the topic up here and after a couple days he is going to read the responses.I have suggested a 4" .357 revolver to him either Ruger,Smith,Colt or Taurus. He has around $500.00 to spend.I suggested a shotgun first but he said he only wants a handgun and this will be the only gun he buys.Let the reccomendations begin.Who agrees with mine? And what are the suggetions for those who dont?Remember he is a very occasional shooter not often at all.

Also note he is going with what gets the most suggestions.Maybe not the platform because it may not fit him well but the caliber.

Ruger KP89DC, you can still find factory hi-caps for them. I found three today for $60.

as someone who is not going to go to the range on a regular basis,a revolver would be best.out of the revolvers you mentioned i would go with a ruger in .357.should he ever change his mind on the whole range thing,a semiautomatic could be a possibility.i would reccomend a sig, they have carry models chambered in 9mm,.357 sig and .40.second i would reccomend a glock model 26 9mm.these are carry options for a full size go with a sig p226 in the caliber of your choosing

If he is not going to carry it, then a S&W 686 4" is fine. If he ever plans on carrying it, then a S&W 66 with a 2.5" barrel. Colt, Ruger, and Taurus counterparts will also do.

I recommend a .38/.357 revolver from a major manufacturer. Size? Depends on whether he intends to carry it. For home and car defense, and sometimes carry, I think a 4" K-frame is a great compromise.

    Eric,

    I would recommend a 4", .357 magnum.
    As I am partial to Smith's, a M-19 or M-66.

357 revolver in whatever make/model fits his hand best, and that he is comfortable with. You can also suggest the Ruger so that he could have a choise of shooting 357 or 9mm with the one handgun.

If I knew then, what I know now.

.357 Mag revolver in 2.5 - 4" barrel. I'm mighty partial to S&W, but any of the manufacturers listed produce serviceable sidearms. Most important thing would be how it feels to him. If you can get him to a range where he can try a variety (yours, others' or the range's) before he buys, that would be ideal.

Do yall think I should guide him toward a 3" .357 just to cover that carry issue? As far as I know he only intends it for his house but I think it would be good to have a gun that covers both house and carry should he want to down the road.Im thinking of pointing him to a 3" M-65 Smith or 3" GP-100 Ruger. He has shot my .357 before and he made more than a few comments on how he liked it at the time which is what prompted me to suggest a .357 I couldnt get him to go more often because he said he didnt need to go because he didnt even own a gun.The times they are a changin.Atleast I get a new shootng buddy now instead of just a good drinking/fishing buddy, hes pulling triple duty now.

    Eric,

    I forgot about the M-13 and M-65. I had a M-13, 3 in., round
butt one time. Pachmayr Gripper grips improved the feel for me.
That should be a good one for a starter.
