Emergency household planning..........

I was really tired when I read bwa's post about safeguarding the nieghbors and I almost answered it as such, but then thought it might make an interesting topic-

In my household we have established a code phrase only known to me and my wife, when she hears that phrase she knows to secure our son and go to a specifically designated room of the house which is not easily accessable from the outside but is a viable point of egress. From that point she would dial 911, retrieve her revolver, and decide if it's fight or flight.

This room is also located in a "natural" no fire zone in the household, and it is also the point that I would "retrograde" to.

I know it sounds a little nuts, and over the top, but when it's all said and done at the end of the day, me and my family will be safe and accounted for. It took a little doing to convince my wife, until about a month after I explained what I wanted her to do. She wasn't really convinced until I pointed out a home invasion that had occurred in a simular sized town & and to a family simular to ours.

I also pop quiz my wife from time to time, by handing her an unloaded pistol or rifle, a loaded magazine or speed loader and ask her to load/ describe the location of the safety (BUT NOT TAKE IT OFF SAFE) and unload the firearm. I usually do this at a screwball time, like when she's ready for bed, cooking dinner or any other time where her mind is elsewhere. (Mind you now, if I try this more than once a month, I get my butt kicked!) Since we met she has gone from rank novice to a proficient user.

What she doesn't know is that I always use inert ammo for this exercise, you see, for her, the realism is the same, the "training" value is the same, and the safety margin is exclusively high.

We also discuss at least once every couple of months what our actions should be in the case of a fire in various parts of the house, who's responsibility it is to do what, and how.

Am I just a stone crazy lunatic or am I just hedging my bets? I'm really curious if anyone else thinks like this, or has implemented something simular.

Matt

If you ever have a problem you'll be the smartest guy in the neighborhood. If not, you're the nut down the street.

I think it's a good idea to have plans of action for various situations and do a "reasonable" amount of drilling. But be careful not to become so obsessed with all the "what-if's" that you don't have any fun...or you family and friends can't stand to be around you. There is a line where one goes from a prepared individual to a nut.

I've considered this in my house as well.More for a civil emergency, than a home invasion. My fiance is fairly proficient at most of the
firearms we have on hand(She's partial to the AK pattern rifle with the 75 rd. drum!),but we agreed that our respective families would truly think us nut jobs if we had a family-wide emergency plan,in the event of a civil or national emergency.

Meebe I'm a little old fashioned when it comes to things like accepting and meeting the responsibility of protecting my wife (and son, NOT trying to accuse or insuate anything, it's just how I see it), but my past jobs as a Private Investigator and Bounty hunter have left me in a position where there is a fair potential for retaliation. I suppose that's why I take the bent I do, I guess the other reason is that when I was in the service on active duty, I watched more folks freeze up from skill decay than lack of knowledge. In case I didn't state this clearly enough, this subject comes up about every 2 or 3 months, and it's not like an event the neighbors plan for every first weekend of the month, y'know,..."Honey, Come quick- Matt45 & family is at it again!!"

You're not nuts. My wife and I also have a code word system, except the code word means "I'm in serious trouble and I can't call the police (i.e. hostage, kidnap, etc.) go get help." I've kept it that basic because she is skeptical. I haven't thought of a basic emergency reaction plan - guess I should though.
