1911 gun rebuild

I own a 1911. It was made in 95. I have replaced the main slide spring, 6 months ago. I was just wondering what the normal guidelines are to rebuilding it. I'm sure the age, and rounds fired have allot to do with it. I would guess around 1000 rounds have been fired through it. The only wear I can see, is on the pin that goes through the barrel. When should the fireing pin, and spring be replaced? I have seen rebuilding kits that contain all of the needed hardware. I don't think I have to replace everything. Another question I have is about the slide safety. With the gun loaded, and hammer cocked, I can move the slide safety up and down about 1 mm. Is this normal? or is something wrong?. Last question... what's the half cocked position of the hammer for? Any answers will be welcomed.
