i want a rifle......

hello all. i have saved a few extra bucks and would like to purchace a rifle. I would use it for shooting around and hunting whitetail deer. what caliber and gun is good for me? would an SKS be good?

How about a good ole Marlin 30-30 lever action to start with. Great woods gun.

Are you taking long shots over open fields or hunting in thick brush.

For longer shots, I would recommend a Bolt-Action in .270Win or .30-06.

For a brush gun either a .30-.30 lever or .44 Magnum Semi auto rifle.

I agree with sig232 if you're shooting under 200 yds hor an all around rifle I'd think a 30-06 bolt action which ever you like (I'm partial to Rugers)

It does sound like he will be taking any long shots for a while. Are you looking to be able to do some target shooting for accuracy as well?...if so, I would recommend a .308, or even a 25-06. Neither one of them will beat you up too bad and both have the potential to be extremely accurate rifles...and both have some long range potential as well.

Take a look at a Stevens 200 bolt action in the caliber you decide on.Very accurate and can be bought new usually for less than 300 bucks.

Bolt action 30-06. I like the Remington model 700. An 06 will cleanly kill anything on the North American Continent. nuff said...

I think my Browning Medallion A Bolt is good too, but a tad more than sks money...so just mentioned "less spensive" guns...[:D]

how bout a bolt .243 a savage wouldnt be all that expensive and from what i hear just as good as anything. just so long as the biggest thing you shoot is deer

The SKS or a Marlin 30-30 would be tough to beat for a starter rifle. If you go with the SKS, just be sure that your state allows you to hunt deer with a semi-auto rifle and don't go hunting with FMJ ammo.

Careful, don't buy a Winchester 94, because one will lead to two, and two to three... Yup, it all starts with a standard 94 .30-30, then its a trapper .45colt, then a ranger compact .357mag, then you'll be trying to find a large loop carbine...

Prices folks are asking for 94's these days, that shouldn't be a problem.

A bolt action rifle in no smaller than 243 win for my part of the world....that said i have shot deer with a 22-250 but i can put a bullet where it needs to be put..a marlin or winchester 30-30 works fine also for closer ranges....An sks for big game rifle...not imho

30-06 is too small!

Have you looked into larger calibers? I find the 375 Holland & Holland and the 416 Rigby to be great deer hunting rounds. They are also very pleasurable to shoot from the bench. [;)][:o)]
