Robot cars on public roads? California says yes
California legislators have sent a bill to the governor's desk that could push forward the development of autonomous cars in the Golden State. The new bill requires the state's Department of Motor Vehicles to adopt new regulations, including safety standards and "performance requirements" for new autonomous vehicles. Once those new rules are put in place, the bill "would permit autonomous vehicles to be operated or tested on the public roads in this state."

The bill, known as SB 1298, unanimously passed the state senate on Wednesday, following a 72-4 approval from the state legislature earlier in the week. The text of the legislation says that autonomous vehicles "offer significant potential safety, mobility, and commercial benefits for individuals and businesses in the state and elsewhere."

I would say this sounds like the federal government is going to give California a lot of money to test these cars and Cali legislators want it badddd. It does not matter that it will endanger citizens, the money comes first.

When are they going to push the red button at HARP and knock these yayhoos loose from the mainland?

Far more damage from this than from ARs that hold 2+ rounds.

They couldn't possibly be any worse than the drivers we already have in CA. This state is the worst for inattentive, lousy drivers. And I'm from MA and grew up driving in Boston. At least Boston drivers have great skill at being offensive, rotten drivers - CA drivers are just lazy, sloppy & self absorbed.

I fail to see where, based on this article, that this will cost the state money. I'm not saying that the government won't find a way to screw it up, but as it stands, it appears that they just want to put some regulations in place and also start issuing permits (which will generate revenue).

Also, as pointed out in the article, California wasn't the first state to do this, Nevada was.

There's $2MM. Minimum. Before the first permit is issued.

Absolutely stupid, unnecessary, unworkable idea. The Dems in this state have lost their minds.

    72-4 and Unanimous.

That sure is a lot of Democrats.

4 Republicans in the whole of the state? Glad they held out.[;)]

Technically, that doesn't REQUIRE spending any money. We're already paying politicians. Where are you getting your figures?

In all honesty, I'm pulling them out of my butt.

I'm absolutely guessing that this will require the full time work of at least 20 FTE. In CA, thats going to be adding additional staff at the rate of $50k (and I'll bet you money this isn't going to be done in a year) We're now at $1MM in payroll.

Oh, they will be eligible for healthcare, CalPERS and a butt load of other benefits. Figure all up $100k in total cost per full time employee.

There will be two part timers. Who knows what they will get? Not me. Their part time staffing agency will get paid 50k per. But the private contractor will get 35k or so.

We haven't hired the experts yet. This is just staff to cover the DMV part.

We can contract with MIT or NJIT to provide data on collisions with guard rails (surely we want to do this?) What are the chances of people being killed as we adopt this new technology?

Oh, BTW, they are going to destroy at least $100K in guard rails during the testing phase. Please provide those. FOB. (thats freight on board) plus shipping.

Lets consider the impact on high speed rail? Who should we pay to weigh in on that aspect? Probably the aholes who have been working on that project for the last century. Lets see if they think its a good idea. Just the postage for sending out the questionairre is 2k.

How is this going to affect the Federal Highway funding? We'll need at least two lawyers to figure that out. (this isn't all that expensive since lawyers eat their own... but we'll need to do the background checks and hire a good pr firm to explain why they enter the building, but never seem to leave)

Like I said, TECHNICALLY, it doesn't require spending. But as I said in my first post, the government can easily find a way to screw it up. In all honesty, I'd rather my money go to something cool like that as opposed to being given to illegal immigrants. Either way, I'm not getting a dime of it back.
