    Ok looks like the Mach2 is made from a 22lr that has been necked down, The 17HMR is a 22mag necked down. So that should make the mach 2 shorter.? Make sence?

    Hornady unveiled their new .17 Mach 2 rimfire cartridge at SHOT Show 2004. It is essentially a .22 Long Rifle necked down to .17 caliber but is formed using the slightly longer CCI Stinger case. Unlike the Stingers though, the Hornady load will not have nickel-plated cases. Advertised velocity is 2100 fps in rifle length barrels with the .17-grain bullet. These velocities combined with the sleek polymer tipped bullet will flatten trajectories significantly over .22 LR ammo. Mid-range trajectory for a 100-yard zero with the Mach 2 is listed as 7/10ths. of an inch compared to 1.9-inches for the fastest .22 LR load, the CCI Stinger.

    A .22 LR necked down to .17 caliber is not a new idea. Aquila Ammunition Company of Mexico has been featuring such a round at SHOT for the past few years but as yet, no ammo has made north of the border. It is unlikely it will now that Hornady and CCI have teamed up to produce the new Mach 2. With these major U.S. companies behind the cartridge it's a safe bet firearm manufacturers will move quickly to make rifles available. It should be noted also, the Hornady Mach 2 offers superior ballistics over the ill-fated Aquila round, which advertised 1850-feet per-second with a 20-grain bullet.

    I posted a topic about this new round from hornady. (17hm2) And everyone laughed at me. When I was at the "Shot Show" two weeks ago I saw it and looked at the different ammo for it. It can not be safely shot in 17hmr barrels. The barrels and guns are supposed to be out by sometime this summer. Ammo should be in around Auguest. I know that I will be putting one on a 10/22 for shooting squirls and birds with. It has a little less energy than a 22lr but it is still moving much faster. Also it is much more accurate than a 22lr. I am glad that someone else has seen it besides me.

    A friend of mine has already built one and he had some of the Aguila ammo for it. He took and old 22 bolt rifle and rebarreled it. He got the reamer from Clymer. He did this months ago! It shoots pretty good to boot...1/2"/50 yards. I think he said he got something like 2075fps but I really don't remember exactly. As far as future ammo choices go for the 17HMR that 20 grain loading using XTP bullets may be a good one! GHD
