DICKINSON - On Aug. 1, the Dickinson Police Officers Association will start its seventh Citizen's Police Academy class.
The academy is designed to give residents a deeper understanding of the police department.
The academy teaching staff and speakers are comprised of Dickinson police officers. Guest speakers from other criminal justice and law enforcement agencies make appearances with information in their specialized fields.
Instructors discuss topics such as traffic enforcement, narcotics, juvenile law, DWI enforcement, SWAT operations and building searches.
The program runs for 15 weeks, with a four-hour class each Thursday night.
The classes are limited to 25 students. All students must apply for membership and have been approved before the start of each academy. The classes are free.
Graduates may join the Dickinson's Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association.
