...and sorry, guys, but I didn't like it. Of course, I rented it at the range, and it was old and scratched to hell. I liked the weight of it ( I'm used to " plastic " guns ) but that was pretty much all. I didn't like the two-dot vertical sight, and the gun looked too short for as heavy as it was. For some reason, I thought it would be larger. The magazine was hard to load and I had a hard time getting the thing to stay in the gun.
I'm glad I didn't spend my money on one.

You got one that had been severely abused. Not a good example.

Kind of like renting a 1990 Chevrolet with 160,000 miles on it and having had NO maintenance, and then saying Chevrolets are junky cars because of that one experience.

I carry a 229 every day, and while is is heavier and not nearly as elegant as my Commander, it is a great duty pistol. When training, I have to use dummy rounds to set up a malfunction, because the guns just won't do it on their own.

I don't like the bar-dot sights either, but all our guns have 3-dot night sights so it isn't a problem.

Sound like your example had a bad magazine or magazine catch.

Too many fumble-fingered Freddies renting it I suppose.

greetings, i shot a 226 a year or so ago at a range in denver, just to compare with my astra 100's , and star 30m, and altho i thought it performed with them the price was nearly double and the the mag's nearly 4x that of the star (astras have always been high, even before the ban they were $60.00 apiece, now their around the $100.00 range). so being thrifty i'll stay with the spanish pieces. oh and those that think the astra and sig are the same gun haven't gotten closer than the pic's. other than the bullet they share and a simular silowette they have a very dissimular lock up and trigger system, etc. respt submitted dads-freehold

i'm with Nunn. ive never had a problem with my 229. i had to get special permission to carry it instead of the issued beretta. i agree with his car analogy

Uncle Sam issued me the 228 for 18 months and it was dream in spite of the fact that it was all worn to heck. It's the most accurate pistol I've ever fired and maybe someday I'll own one. Too busy saving up for Christmas gifts now.
