The fallout from the hoffific bank robbery in Norfolk continues as a NSP officer kills himself. Seems the officer stopped one of the suspects a week ago and cited him for carrying a conceild weapon. The serial number of the gun was entered into the computer wrong and the gun came back clean when in fact it was stolen. I guess he could not deal with the guilt that he might have been able to stop the robbery a week ago. I feel that even if he did arrest this guy it would not have stopped the crime since there were three others involved. I would not have blamed him for a simple mistake. Even if he did bust him, he would have been out by now and would have already found another illeagal gun.

    guns-n-painthorses:
I saw this on FOX News tonite. This is indeed terrible!
I pray that his family gets the support they need.
I am also concerned that this trooper didn't get the support and counseling that might have helped him.

Sometimes people want to be the best they can be! Then again fate won't allow this to happen. I guess failure to some is the maximum penalty they cannot live with.

I feel sorry for the family also.

Suicide among members of the law enforcement profession is all too common.

I worked with three officers on my department during my career that took their own lives. It IS tragic for the family. I cannot imagine what it takes to drive a person to do it, but they must feel very strongly about the reason.

God be with him and his family! The real tragedy here is that the murderers will probably escape the death penalty, and only he will have paid the price.

I never chose that path, but I come from a long line of Irish cops. I have always repected the profession and the brave people who do the job and do it well. My heart goes out to the family.

I remember a few years ago when a high ranking military figure was accused of wearing decorations he had not earned, he too took his own life. In his mind he had failed to live up to ideals and standards, where death was far easier than living with the shame of his actions.

Makes you wonder if the highway patrolman was thinking the same thing...he had taken an oath to protect and serve the public, I'm sure he felt tremendous shame and guilt for what happened. Had he lived, he would no doubt have been litigated against by the deceased victims families and his career path ruined. Our prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

Japanese officers often took the same path when they failed to live up to their duties to Emporer Hirohito.

Maybe these examples show how seriously some people take the purpose and meaning of oaths. An arguement could be made where these examples show the level of commitment to their sworn oath...in comparrison to Bill Clinton who took an oath and laughed each time he failed to honor it.

As Nebraska Governor Mike Johanns stated "this only compounds the tragedy".

The four bad guys are all Latinos. I have not heard this discussed in the media, of course, but I wonder if any were illegal.

Darn just think of him having to command hundreds of men to their death or killing 1,000 and walking on their rotten corpses and ashes
(I lost count) but I never feel like killing myself.... I just ask for the next mission!

I think even minor investigation into this officer's recent history will reveal that the precipitate for suicide was there before these events ever happened. The nexus between a mistaken keyboard entry and the taking of one's own life may have media and political appeal, but I fear the truth is never that simple.

Often the mind believes it is thinking, when it is only passing from one metaphor to the next.
