Of someone who is/was a real hero, at least in my eyes. He fought against enemies in war, and even a greater enemy in peace time, which finally took his life. I'll repost this every now and then, just because, for some reason, this is a man who I respected for no other reason than he was a GB member, a Marine, and my elder. I know its difficult to understand, but I felt then and feel now a true sorrow at this man's passing. God speed all good men in their passing.
Robert LeVan
Major Robert L. LeVan, USMC (Ret.), 66, died Nov. 12, 2002 at Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Major LeVan was a career Marine officer who was designated a U.S. Naval aviator in 1956. He was born April 25, 1936, in Williamsport, Pa., and was the son of the late Harold Edward LeVan and Mary Kelley LeVan. Robert was married to Grace Elizabeth Stahl LeVan, also of Williamsport, Pa. They have lived in Jacksonville since 1963.
Major LeVan's military career included duty in fixed wing aircraft at Cherry Point; an instructor in the advanced training command at Beeville, Texas, for student military pilots; aircraft carrier duty with the 1st Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan (twice); two tours of duty in DaNang, Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict; and several years in various squadrons at New River Air Station in Jacksonville plus several temporary additional duties. His career terminated as executive officer of VMO-1 on Jan. 1, 1975.
During the 22 years he served, his military decorations included Bronze Star, Air Medal - with the bronze number of "45" representing in excess of 900 combat missions; Purple Heart; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry; and Vietnam Service Medal. While serving as a pilot in fixed wing aircraft as an instructor he was also recognized for completing over 10,000 accident-free hours of flight.
Robert and Grace have four children: Robert Jr. and wife, Patricia Clark LeVan and Christine Ward, all of Charlotte, Michael LeVan of Rustburg, Va. and Domenec LeVan of the home; and three grandchildren, Michael and Mary Ward and Samantha LeVan.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Jacksonville on Gum Branch Road at 11 a.m. Friday. Following this worship service, a graveside memorial will take place with full military honors at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
