The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March hailed the defeat of U.S. Congressman Bob Barr in his bid for re-election to represent Georgia's 7th District. Barr, a Board member and Life Member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), had the full backing of the NRA, which spent thousands of dollars on the race and dispatched its President Charlton Heston and Vice President Wayne LaPierre on numerous campaign visits on his behalf. In the end, the NRA was unable to turn out enough votes to save Barr.

"So much for the power of the NRA," said Michael D. Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign. "It couldn't even save its favorite son, its Board member, Bob Barr, in a conservative, heavily Republican district."

Barr has long been one of the extremist gun lobby's key allies in the United States Congress. When Barr was first elected to the House of Representives in 1994, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich picked him to head up a "Firearms Legislation Task Force." In this capacity, Barr immediately embarked on a campaign to dismantle the nation's gun laws, beginning with his sponsorship of a 1996 bill to repeal the federal Assault Weapons Ban. After that move was defeated, he went on to sponsor legislation that would have loosened firearms restrictions placed on people convicted of domestic violence abuse, and he continued to oppose any sensible gun safety measures including background checks at gun shows.

Two weeks ago, Barr was involved in a widely-reported campaign incident, in which a gun he was handling at a fundraiser fired, shattering a glass door. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the shooting, but the episode embarrassed Barr and the NRA, which touts itself as the leader in gun safety.

Meanwhile, the NRA faces another campaign embarrassment in Wyoming. Earlier this week, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reported that the NRA's PAC broke state law by making automated calls to support its endorsed candidate for Governor. Wyoming law prohibits automated phone dialing devices, particularly for political campaigns.
