FEMA offers independent (free) study on how to prepare for natural and man made disasters as well as how to participate in preparation and resolution of such emergencies at http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb

I forgot to add when you get to the web page click on Independent Study.

You can enroll online and receive certificates of completion once you finish each course. My husband and I are doing these using the hard copy course (so we can carry them to idle places-bathrooms and doctors offices to name a few) for study and completion. Once we do the hard copy we take the exam online and get the results in about 24 hours. It usually takes about a week to get the certificate and new course in the mail. They offer college credit for a fee. Military Reservists may be able to earn points for completing these and others may receive CEU's if you check with your employer.

Some of the courses are Emergency Program Manager, Emergency Preparedness, Radiological Emergency Management, Hazardous Materials, Emergency Response to Terrorism, A Citizen's Guide to Disaster Assistance to name a few.

Very good post. Thanks Susie. When I was stationed at US Atlantic Command (now US Joint Forces Command) I worked in the J5 Plans division. I worked on plans covering Military Support to Civil Authorities (MSCA), Militay Assistance for Civil Disturbances (MACDIS), Radiological Accident Response, and some others. Many of my collegues left the military to work in this field. It was then ('96-'98) and is now a "Growth Industry." Many opportunities are out there in this field and completion of these courses could greatly improve one's chances of being employed here. Private industry and all levels of government have requirements. This might be the opportunity for some to strike out and better themselves or make a life change. Good luck. Great opportunity here for those willing to reach for it. Ed

If you were 27 years old and could make 75K/year while only 20% was taxable, would you go to Kuwait to do it? It's been churning around in my head for awhile and having a nice big house paid for in a couple of years would be very nice. Did I mention you get 2 airplane tickets back to the states every year?

    IDSMAN75:

I did two years in Saudi Arabia. I would rather have been two years locked in a broom closet with a Toyota salesman. Basically, it's like living and working in an asylum. You'll either go crazy or spend a lot of that $75K on personal indulgences and getting out of there every chance you get (there are two long holidays--Ramadan and Haj--and when you know you can be in Rome or Switzerland in seven hours, the temptation is overwhelming). You'll buy the best tv and stereo possible, and have them on constantly to drown out the five daily prayer calls. Phone calls to the States run $9 a minute (my average phone bill was $1500 a month). Alcoholism is rampant among expatriates, many of whom would be unemployable drunks anywhere else (Riyadh alone had six "AA" meeting places, this in a country where alchohol is illegal). Almost every compound has one of more stills cooking "sid" (moonshine). Most important, as an American you would be subjecting yourself to extreme danger by going anywhere in that part of the world. I was there just after the Gulf War, and it sucked then. I can't imagine what danger there is now, following 911 and now talks of attacking Iraq.
