Mashpee, Massachusetts-AP -- The founder of Dunkin' Donuts has died. William Rosenberg was 86.

The food franchising pioneer began his career after World War Two serving coffee, pastries and sandwiches to factory workers.

He started the business after cashing in 15-hundred dollars in war bonds and borrowing another one-thousand dollars.

Rosenberg opened his first coffee and doughnut shop in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1948. It was called the "Open Kettle."

In 1950 he changed the name to Dunkin' Donuts and five years later began selling franchises. It's still the world's largest coffee and baked goods chain with about five-thousand locations.

After battling cancer for three decades, Rosenberg died of bladder cancer at his home in Mashpee, Massachusetts.

Bill was an American icon, responsible for introducing tactical dunking to most academy curricula. I remember once seeing the LAPD Synchronized Sipping and Dunking Team performing six from the Ring-A-Ding, accompanied by pipers playing "Amazing Grace". I wept. No doubt recruitment and morale will suffer. Nunn, my sympathy.

Often the mind believes it is thinking, when it is only passing from one metaphor to the next.
