Decent AR-15

My father-in-law is turning into a real gun nut. Last week he practically made me take him to the shooting range. Anyway, he said he's always wanted and AR-15, and although it would be a little pricey, I would like to get him one for Christmas. What would be a good brand?
Also...I thought the AR-15/M-16 was originally a 7.62 X 39mm rifle. But when I look on GB, most of the ones I see are 5.56mm. Does this have something to do with all the bans on these kinds of guns?

For a reasonably priced shooter I'd recommend DPMS or Rock River Arms. I have one of each and they both shoot way beyond their price range and my ability. One of the addictive things about ARs is that the upper and lower half separate with just 2 pins, and they're all mil-spec enough that uppers and lowers interchange. While the .223 is most common because of the military connection, uppers can also be had in 7.62x39, .22lr. 9mm, 40, .45ACP, the whisper calibers, the SOCOM calibers, etc. All you really need is one lower to make this work, although like I said they're addictive.

Cruise through AR15.com for pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about black rifles.

    Remember your ABC's
    Armalite
    Bushmaster
    Colt

Though not necessarily in that order.
I've been hearing good things about Rock River.

Olympic Arms makes a good AR Colt is one of my favorites.AS for your question about the .223 and 7.62 the .223 is far more common in the AR-15.The US Military carries the M-16 which is a civilian version of the AR-15 .223.

The AR15 was originally sold in .223 only. Over the years, .222, 7.62x39, 9mm and a few unique calibers (e.g., 50A&E, etc.) have been offered, but these variants are far less common. I would stick with .223. You didn't say whether you were in the market for a pre- or post-ban, but there's about a $1000 premium on pre-ban guns. Either way, you're a very generous son-in-law.
