My 3 year old is at the age where he has to question everything. I was cleaning my guns this weekend and my son walked into the room and asked why do yo like guns? I have more then one reason do you?

1. Come from a long line of shooters.
2. Love the way cold steel feels in my hand.
3. When I shoot I feel flooded with power.
4. I love how each gun works different.

WHy do you?

If you will blame gun makers for every shooting then blame car maker for every car accident.

I enjoy guns for several reasons. They are fun to shoot. Shooting tests our skills and becomes very satisfying when we are successful. Guns can be examples of ingenuity and artistic expression, and that makes them beautiful. Guns also are a part of our history and culture. They become a focal point for interaction with our families and friends, bringing us together to share an interest and comraderie.

Great response. When I get together with my shooting buddies rather we are shooting or watching a football game we just love talking about guns.

cc, just a suggestion, if you haven't done so already, get a copy of Eddie Eagle. Best thing for young kids. My girls won't touch a gun without asking.

Guns are like good friends; interesting, each with their own history and experiences, you learn each one, and come to love them in time. You can never get enough of being around them, and they are always there to make you feel better when you need them the most. The more you have of them the better it seems to make you feel. Taking care of them usually results in them taking care of you. Going hunting with them or shooting with them almost always brings lasting memories of good times and of those to follow. Putting one away/saying goodbye, always makes me feel slightly depressed, but its nothing compared to the joy of getting it back out again/saying hello. Why do I like guns? What is there not to like about them? The best thing about guns, and I'm so glad it doesnt apply to friends, is that you can buy one and its yours forever, so long as you maintain it, it will not depreciate. Friends you dont have to buy, and rarely have to maintain, except in the rare morning after of the hunting celebration party. Isnt it sad that your friends cant live as long as your guns? Funny how friends and guns go together so well for me.

...gonna apoligize ahead of time...(very rare)...but gotta do it (bored watching an auction wind down)...Here it is...

Daddy, Can you put 5000 rds. of ammo through a Jennings 9 in a single afternoon without a jam. Let alone shoot 5000 rds through it, without it melting down? Huh daddy...huh...?

ccasey612, You'd have a lot more credibility if you would just say. I was just tellin' a story!!!

Most of the answers are quite applicable. One that I will add is that although I don't shoot as well as I did in my younger (eyes and body) days I still shoot well enough to be competitive. Also enough experience to be able to pass the flame to those that are younger.

I think my response to my kids will be, 'It's a better investment than the stock market and their value will put you through college one day son.'
I will put off the 'why do you shoot bambi?' questions off for a few years with that one.

There are so many good, sincere answers to this I would feel happy to be asked. Why do people like Kung Fu, roller coasters, powerboating, bungi jumping, ship carving, stamp collecting, or any other hobby, skill or passion? It's fun, enriching, skill-building, confidence building; teaches fine motor skills, precision, competence, and sharp eyes; has practical applications for self defense, will come in handy if you join the service (as will those video games); they're an exercise of American individual freedom, like voting -- on and on. Another easy way to give the lie to the gun-banner mentality.

The Firearms Consultant had a good idea. Believe it or not, last year the school my son attends had "Eddie Eagle" in the school for a talk on gun safety. I went because I wanted to see if they were going to be feeding the kids a lot of crap, and I didn't know what the heck Eddie Eagle was. Great program. Lots of good resources sent home for the kids. All very positive on firearms and firearms safety. I was pleased that a local shool would do something like that.

I quess guns, to me, are a sign of Americans right and freedom that does not exist in other countries of the world. They remind me of these rights we have as a result of the power they gave the people to overcome tyranists that would see us have no power or guns. Without guns, the "United States" would not be as it is now.
They helped to feed our ancestors, protect their property, lives, and prevented many a murder. They are a symbol of Americanism.
They are finely crafted mechanical devices some of us have a strong feeling of respect for. They are fun, challenging, and sometimes a peacemaker as well as a lifesaver.
Guns are America and Americans are the symbol of freedom!

I love everything there is about guns. I love the look, the feel, the smell. I love target shooting, hunting, cleaning, reloading ammunition. I love smokeless, I love blackpowder. I love shotguns, rifles & handguns. I even like pellet rifles & toy pop guns.If they made a cologne that smelled like burnt powder, gun oil & hoppes #9, I'd be the first in line. Hell, I smell like that anyway.Dan
