Does your dog bite?

quote:On another occasion, my wife was standing talking to a customer. The customer stated that her dog would not and could not, bite anyone as he had no teeth. Just then the dog lunged at my wife and bit her on the leg. No holes but left one heck of a bruise.

I am always amazed that people will ask this question. I always answered it, "Sure he does, that's why God gave him teeth." For some reason this answer usually disturbed people, so I would add, "But he won't bite you unless you give him a reason to.

Of course he does, that's why God gave him teeth.

My old german shepard mix that I had from '87 to '03 was raised from a pup with 3 children. He never nipped anyone that didn't have it coming, although he did try to get through the screen door at one of the kid's friends for no apparent reason once. Those times he did bite there weren't any serious injuries.

Many moons ago in Germany, I attended a Dog training meet. Most dogs there were , (German Police Dogs}, I was quite taken with a solid black one and the owner said if I liked it so much I could have it as it was not considered to be (Real) if not marked like the normal police dog. I took the dog, had it for about 9 years, until it got so protective, The milk man wouldnt even come on the porch, as the dog would crash through anything to protect his property. One day my wife walked by and I kinda smacked her on the Butt and the dog attacked me, leaving a 6 inch * in my upper thigh, Needless to say, thats the last time he ever bit anyone[xx(]

You have to know your dog and what makes him tick. We have a Rottie that will let small kids lead him around with a kite string, ride him like a pony, and anyone approach and pet him. However when alerted he becomes a dog that can back up a trash truck (and he has). But when given the proper command becomes the kiddie dog again.

You just have to know your dog.

Same thing as Classic, the last dog I had that bit went for a long walk on a short pier[}:)]

My hound I will honestly say I don't think he will bite a human unless severly abused. He loves attention too much and is the biggest baby on four legs, BUT show him a * and he becomes Satan.

I haven't seen any dismemberment of body parts but I have seen blood. Did that clearify your question?

On the occasion that you quoted, the question that "amazes" you, was NOT even asked. They were just talking in general, and the subject of dogs being a pain in the *, came up because her dog was approaching. The customer VOLUNTEERED her statement. As if on cue, the dog did bite. There was no provocation of any kind. NO reason of any kind!!! The lady was SHOCKED, with her dogs action, to say the least. Apologized up one side and down the other, offered to drive my wife to the hospital and pay for any medical bills, etc. etc. etc.

The original post was an example of owners denying that their dogs would do anything wrong. It happens, even when they are standing right there denying it.

When anyone asked me if my dog would bite.
My standard answer was, "She has teeth. Yes, it is possible."

That's kind of why I bought a Ridgeback, if I'm not home he can certainly hold the fort on his own. Yes he bites, he is supposed to bite, he is supposed to protect, and I'm confident that someone could make it into my house, but they would leave a bloody mess soon after he found them. He's as good natured as any animal I've ever known, he's very obedient, and very playful, but he's also completely fearless, and they expect him to weigh in at about 140-150lbs when he's full grown. I paid alot of money, and sat on a nearly year long waiting list, then finally had to have him flown cross country to me. I did lots of homework, and in the end I got what I wanted of course he hasn't attacked anyone, but like everyone else said about thier dogs, he would if he was threatened, or if he was told to he would bite.

I have german shepards and biteing is what they do when biteing is nessesary. they have been to school and not for recess. I try to buy a pup to have around my dog a little while before the old dog goes. I keep a fence with an electic wire around the top. Will not stop him if he wants out but not only will the wire slow him down, it gives people an idea of what they are up against. Having a dog that will not bite is like having a gun that will not shoot. Useless. Just my opinion. Don

My Dane has yet to draw blood from anyone but she has scared the bejesus out of a few.
Every Sunday morning she chomps onto my hand & walks me out to the paper box & its almost impossible to make her let go. Just one of her little quirks, i guess(& she's got a boat-load of em). Love them Danes!

Unless you come into my yard with bacon in your pocket, you're pretty much OK from the dogs. My kids might bite you, though!
