I think a watermelon is a vegetable, and a tomato is a fruit. And a girl I know thinks the opposite, so we made a bet.[:)] Who is right?

I need to find a website that specifically supports my case.

Watermelon's official name is Citrullus lanatus of the botanical family Cucurbitaceae and it is a vegetable! It is related to cucumbers, pumpkins and squash.

As for the tomato?...THE SUPREME COURT STATED ITS A VEGETABLE...IN 1887..

Today tomatoes are on our highest perch, but in 1887 they had their day in the highest court of the land. Are tomatoes a fruit or a vegetable? Ponder that--and that's exactly what the Supreme Court did on February 4, 1887 when tomatoes were elevated to the highest perch in the land, the United States Supreme Court. It's hard to imagine that tomatoes were the subject of a Supreme Court decision that officially labeled them a vegetable.

Tomato is definitely a fruit. The watermelon is a member of the gourd family. Most people consider them to be a fruit, but horticulturists consider them a vegetable (just looked that up).

Supreme Court??? That amazes me. Didn't realize the court had the power to interpret laws of nature and science. Must have been loaded with justices from Kalifornia.

A tomato is both, in the U.S. it is classified as a veggie for sale and transport. The academics classify it as a fruit. Trucking it is a veggie, in your freshman bio class you better check fruit on the exam.

Watermelon is a vegetable being a gourd or melon, tomato is a berry, tomato plants being in the deadly nightshade family. Both are the fruits of the plants that produce them. Is that clear?
