FLORENCE - More than 150 guns and rifles were seized Thursday by police and federal agents from a man who was illegally selling them.
Police and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents said the weapons were seized from a local place after a six-month investigation.
Officers did not identify the seller or location because the investigation is continuing. Nobody has been arrested, but authorities expect arrests on federal charges to come.
"We expect this is one of several seizures in the future," police investigator Keith Terry said. "A lot of surveillance and undercover work was involved in this."
Terry said future seizures could range anywhere from smaller to much larger than Thursday's. Police estimate the weapons confiscated Thursday are worth a combined total of at least $75,000 to $80,000.
"The scariest part is that juveniles were being provided with the guns by this person," investigator Darron Michael said. "If a 15-year-old walked in with cash, he'd leave with a gun."
The weapons were being sold at inflated prices, he said. Most cost several hundred dollars. The most expensive - a German .30-06 - was priced at $2,400.
The man the weapons were seized from was running an illegal pawnshop. He would hold them for a number of days and either keep them or sell them back at a high interest rate, police said.
The weapons were purchased without the proper paperwork and background checks.
Authorities would not elaborate on where the man got the guns, since the investigation is not complete.
"We'll determine whether the weapons were stolen," Terry said.
He said police and ATF agents believe there could have been more than 300 weapons for sale at one point.
ATF agents will take possession of the weapons for evidence during the investigation.
"Someone like this makes it hard for legitimate gun dealers to make a living," Michael said.
A hall in the Florence Police Department was lined with rifles Thursday afternoon, while a large table in an adjoining room was covered with pistols and rifles.
A plastic container held more pistols.
Each weapon had a round red sticker with a price on it. The weapons ranged from small pistols to automatics and military-type rifles. Some rifles still were in the manufacturer's box.

It becomes a grey area when you are "making a living" at doing it without the FFL. The question is, what constitutes "making a living?"
