Hear About The Houston Elevator Accident?

It was in the news here. Big thing. Bad thing.

25 year old resident physician went to get on the elevator in the hospital. Door shut on him and failed to spring back open. He was caught, part way in and part way out, when the car began to move. The moving car decapitated him when it got to the next floor.

Head fell into the elevator car, which was occupied by a lone female.

WOW! How does such a thing happen?

Man, that's awful. I almost lost an arm in one, someone was trying to get on at the last second and I stuffed my arm in the gap. The door didn't bounce back and the elevator started to move. I yanked back and got my arm out but I would never try to slide my whole body through the gap, that's tempting fate[xx(]

What I hated to hear was that the lady who was in the elevator had to wait in there for 20-25 minutes before the Houston Fire Dept. was able to rescue her. All that time the DR.'s head was lying on the elevator floor.
Once they got her out they immediately took her to the emergency room. She was TOTALLY Freaked out, as you might imagine.

Having repaired and checked the elevators here on the hospital - I wonder if there is something like a door sensor-system required in the states ??!!??

Elevatoraccidents are awfull in any occation.
I'm glad we haven't had any here in Greenland.

Here, the elevators brakes doesn't release, before every door is closed - the elevator needs a complete closed circuit for every door in the system, before it gives the ok.
There is a wire running throughout the doorsystem - if a door is open, then the little shortcircuit-arm doesn't reach the sensor.
There's even a backup system on it.

Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.

The news report I heard, stated that there had been some maintenance work done on the elevator shortly befor the accident. Sounds like the maintenance guys had put a jumper across the safety switch, for maintenance purposes, and forgot to remove it before returning it to service.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

Makes me think twice about inserting a body part into a closing elevator door to stop it from closing so I can get on.

I ride in them everyday and take accidents for granted. I can't count how many times I have stuck an arm or foot into the closing doors so someone else could board. However I have never tried to squeeze into one at the last second. What a gruesome incident, I really feel for the lady.

I just have to ask though. What compelled this doctor to shove his head into the path of the doors as they were closing? It's not like elevator doors slam shut, they slowly come togeather not so fast that you can't react to them and not so fast that they crush some body part when they shut. I just don't get it....folks don't use your head as a door stop.

Talked to my brother-in-law last night
who is an elevator mechanic.I can't remember
all the different safety devises involved, but
the way he sees it,the only way this could happen
would be if someone "jumped" some connections while
working on it and forgot to remove them when they
finished.According to the news reports I've seen,
there had been some repairs/service done recently.

In any event,it is certainly a tragic event for
    all of those involved.[:(][:(]

    That's really horrible.

    I hope he wasn't a head doctor.

The guy really lost his head, huh?

Can't get ahead of the game that way.

    Talk about getting head.

Try to imagine being trapped immobile in an elevator door. You can't move.

Now imagine the car starts to move. You see the edge of the opening coming up, and know you can't possibly avoid being shorn asunder.

Can you imagine the horror as your neck contacts the door opening and the car still moves?

Use a little empathy here. THIS WAS NOT FUNNY. The poor SOB got his head cut off and some poor lady had to stand there in the elevator car with the guy's head and whatever else came along with it for a half hour or so.

I wonder why the lady didn't hit the emergency stop button in the elevator. I guess she panic'd... Bummer for the guy who lost his head that she didn't hit the emergency stop button.

REMEMBER HIT THE BIG RED BUTTON IF MACHINERY IS ABOUT TO MUNCH SOMEBODY!!
