The military and an awful lot of PDs obviously think they're dandy.

Rugged, not fancy, reliable. I have the shortest barrel allowed by law, either pistol grip or synthetic stock depending on which side of the bed I get up on, easy to change in a minute or so. Also has after-market stocks and accessories available if you want to trick it out. I paid too much back when I was enthusiastic but ignorant. But the guy who sold it to me is dead, so I guess I'm ahead.

IMHO they are the best value for the money you pay on the market today. I love my 835. It's nothing fancy but it feels good in the hands and it does the work that God intended it to do.

Home defense - you can't beat a 12 ga. Just chambering a round will scare off all but the real serious or crazy. My 590 with the pistol grip would take care of the 2 just mentioned. Best of all, you don't have to be a crack shot and you don't worry about over penetration. Relax guys, I'm talking about a round going through your wall and taking out the next door neighbor's beagle! The pistol grip is nice because it makes the piece very easy to use in a confined space (like a hallway).

Actually, maggie's not exactly wrong. Most of the ads advertise the Mossberg with the long tube as holding 8, I just assume they mean 7+1. My 870 with tube extender holds 6 in the tube, and yes, the tube extender makes the tube slightly longer than the barrel, so that's not entirely a figment either.

Funny thing -- the Mossberg reputation has improved over the years. Back in around 1988 or 1989, when I went in to buy my Remington 870, I was told more than once by dealers that the 870 was not only more robust than the Mossberg, but that there had been some Mossberg failures. Now I assure you I am not trying to start anything here; I'm just reporting to you what I was told when I went shopping. Of course, given that, I came home with a Remington SP Magnum.

I have looked lately at the idea of switching to a Mossberg in the Marine finish with the long tube, since it holds one more than my 870. Obviously, I have not held a grudge against the Mossberg, and as you say they are indeed used by the military and LEOs with success. I just wonder how come they were getting a bad rap from some L.A. dealers back in '89?

Over the years I have found that dealers "bad rap" a gun for two reasons only:

    1. Not in stock.
    2. Least profit.

RE: Remington vs Mossberg, I suspect it was the latter.

Oh yea, excellent firearm. I've got a 590 w/20" military barrel w/bayonet lug, heat shield, speedfeed stock, and ghost ring sights. Boy does it look mean. But it shoots great. Never malfunctioned. And it shoots slugs like a wet dream.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Maggie, I was just curious. The math didn't work our right.

I have the 20" barrel 500a and it holds eight 2/34" shells in the tube.

No big deal! You got the right weapon for the job, buddy.

I have a Mossberg 500, use it for everything from Deer hunting, turkey hunting, clay shooting, small game. It is a great gun. It has a great price tag, and acessorizing a 500 is easy and not expensive. I also like the ambidetrous safety. Get a Mossberg.

The only advantage to the 835 is the ability to shott 3.5" shells. Out of all the shotguns I have owned over the years, the Mossberg 500 has got to be the absolute best shotgun for the money. And when they are worn out, that is when they work best!

i love mine. 500a 28" accuchoke barrel. My friends all call it the "money gun". It doest matter who shoots it it just drops the birds. They just work. mine was used when I bought it. I think it is a crown grade? gold trigger, lots of engraving. Never did anything to it, clean it sometimes- maybe... Let me down once, 6-700 rounds into the day was getting kinda dirty, barrel was really hot let a fired AA in chamber and it wouldn't extract after a minute or two. had to pry it out with a knife. fired another 200 rds that night put it away, been fine since I think I have cleaned it since. Maybe 10k rounds later. probably by best investment in firearms.
