Science confirms casual observation: summer was hot and dry
Washington-AP -- Just in case brown lawns and withered fields didn't clue you in -- a new report says the summer of 2002 was hotter and drier than usual.
According to the National Climatic Data Center, June through August was the warmest summer since the 1930s -- and drought affected about half the country.
Average temperatures in the continental U-S were 73-point-nine degrees -- the third hottest on record and one-point-eight degrees above normal.
The center reports that no state was significantly colder than normal and many were much warmer. There was also below average rainfall in 29 states.
The report comes one day after the National Weather Service forecasted continuing dry conditions for much of the country through winter.
