i posted this on the "experts" forum and didnt get much response i was wondering if i could get a little more feedback here. i love to hog hunt using my ruger m77 .22 mag. i am still a little undecided on what ammo is good to use. the far range i shoot is about 100yds tops. i've tried various types of ammo and all seem to shoot fine through ( done federal 30 grain to all the cci to winchester to remington premiere) the gun. i am not enough of a marksman and i dont have a long enough range to tell if some brands of ammo are inconsistent or dont hold a consistent point of impact. and it is hard to tell what kind of damage and energy some have. so let me know what you guys have had success with. currently thinking cci hollow maxi-mags.. but still undecided.

thanx for your help
steve

Anyone else notice a difference in the winchester dynapoint 45grn ammo? They used to shoot fine in my AMT but now they won't cycle the action. Just too weak. Bought three boxes (two from a gunshow and one from walmart)and they all act the same just work the slide enough to cock the hammer but not eject the empty. Every other brand and weight that I have tried work flawlessy.

Are you saying you have hunted and taken hogs with a .22 mag or want to? Isn't it a bit light for hogs. Use at least a big calibre handgun with solid bullets and a .308 win or 12 ga slug wouldn't be too much. HP's won't penetrate the beastie's shoulders and that armoured neck. Definitely using a hollow point would be out. Of course, we could be thinking two different types of porkers too.

i've taken N.E. grounhogs with a .22 magnum several times ( up to about 10 so far). and all the ranges were under 100 yards. in my area u dont get shots much farther because the land is pretty hilly. and around where i am at people get to edgey if they hear the crack of a deer rifle out of season. i dont own a light calibre centerfire like a .223. i would have to jump to a 30-06. the cci shoots fine.

rugster have u tried the cci maxi mag gold dot hp ammo?

btw do they make smaller than 125 grain 30-06 that is commercially available?

    i dont reload.

No I havent tried the Maxi Mag in Gold Dot,but if the price's arent to much higher I sure would like to.I pay about $5.00 a box for the CCI Maxi Mag.I did forget to mention I found some Winchester 22 Mag shells .40gr HPs on sale and bought about ten box's and they shoot as well as the CCIs.I havent made any scope adjustments any way.

are u using the solid nose or the hollow points in the cci. and if i remember right all the winchesters are solid. the maxi mag gold dot has a huge hollow point on it. about twice the area of the regular cci maxi mag hollow point. and i was just curious on how that would affect things. i figure it would mushroom nicely, but how much would it slow the bullet down through loss in aerodynamics. it seems to be an interesting ammo to play with.
