The gun is packed in cotton cloth, inside a taped shut, hard plastic, foam-lined gun case, which is inside two inches of taped on bubble wrap, inside a cardboard box. My only worry is UPS said they had to open the package to ensure the gun was actually there and they would re-wrap it. I insured it for $400.00.

Seems to me UPS would need a warrant to open a package and now that they re-opened it who is liable for damages should there be any! I have not used UPS in a year and have had no problems, none whatsoever!

UPS always wanted to open the package and inspect the rifle. To see if it was there and UNLOADED. I got tired of having to repackage every time and I did not trust the job they did. That is why I switched to USPS for long guns. Never had them want to open one yet.

They would not need a warrant to open and inspect the contents. The item is in their care and they have the right to inspect it to make sure it does not violate DOT rules.
They do have the duty to insure that the packing is resecured, and take due and dilligent care in the transporting of that package.

FOLLOW UP FROM SHIPPER TO MY FFL who shipped A Marlin rifle....

That's nothing....at first they(UPS) tried to convince me it had to be shipped via
    air, next day, at $67.56.

Fortunately I was prepared and pointed out to them their own G.I. (General
Information) screen indicated long guns can go ground.

Last year I had to return a pistol to Ruger for some factory repairs. They returned it (fixed of course) by overnight UPS, requiring a signature. Now I live in a rural area but there is still traffic on the road. The idiot left it laying next to my mailbox, out in the open. No signature of course.

I emailed their corporate headquarters in Atlanta. The bottom line was that this guy was on the route for so many years, he could do whatever he wanted.

Nice way to run a company, not to mention endangering children, potentially if someone had decided to steal the box.

Yeah, UPS is Union(one of the strongest) screwing with one of their drivers is no easy task. Although I think rules are rules, but I think we are in the minority.

I have been shipping guns for about twelve years by UPS and have never been asked what's in the package. When I tell them they have never asked that it be opened. I think it has a lot to do with where you are located.

Based on personal experience and anecdotal evidence, it is all too clear that while there are company rules / policies, when the rubber hits the road, it's the drivers & terminal managers who call the shots depending on their moods & political beliefs.

Policy followed is that which the Person in Charge decides. If a power happy "do it my way" sort of individual....you will jump through the hoops....!!

If the Person in Charge just wants "Results" then that's another matter and things go quite well.....! It's interesting to watch a Person who doesn't care about Results but only the Manner in which the process proceeds.....and the more complicated the process, the higher their level of satisfaction.....

How come the first individual is always the one I get to deal with?
