What kind of house would you build?

If you were concerned about security in the future and had won the lottery, what type of home would you build?
In the ground in the desert? The entire house made of 3 foot thick concrete? Regular house with armour steel plated walls?
No, No, I'm not a nut, but was just wondering if such a thing wouldn't be a bad idea since you already have the money.
I know it sounds dumb- but I'd like to buy an old navy ship and turn it into a home.
Go ahead and laugh!!![:D][:D][:D][:D]

I like concrete because it's "fire" prof 2 methods I am considering are tip-up concrete walls, you pour the slab then the walls on top when cured you tip them up to connect with pillers then pour a cap to hold it all together.

the other one is slip form ruble/cement very cheap (if you nave lots of rocks),this one is nice because it works well with straw bale insulation.

Imagine if you could drag a battle ship to where you live, dig a big hole and drop her in.

All the neighbors will see is the guns aimed at their house and the command center or bridge above ground.

What a awesome idea on an old navy ship!

Load the cannons with blackpowder and fire 'em off every once in awhile should keep the folks from thinking of robbing you.

Since the moajority of your 'house' is underground you don't have to pay taxes on it right? How does that work anyways?

60'X19' with twin 1400 HP diesel engines. 1500 gallon fuel capacity. Master stateroom with one guest stateroom. 2 heads. 2 helm stations. aAll the electronics I would need for cruising Alaska waters in the summer(24 mile radar, fish finder with 20 degree transducer, chart plotter/gps, color sonar) and then heading to Hawaii in the winter via Midway.

I would convert a surplus submarine and keep it submerged just beyond the three mile limit. No income tax, no property tax, no weapons bans, no fishing license.

Forget the 'last ditch underground' bit...a quart of gas and you be gone.
However...the underground is all that makes sense for energy..55 degrees without doing anything..and around here, tornadoes

I think having a house underground is a great idea to save money on heating, protection from tornado's, if she's concrete she ain't gonna burn.

Have a shack of a house on top so when they come to get you....sneak downstairs thru your hidden passage and slide the steel door shut....let 'em torch the house on top...if you built your house good enough the bottom would be fine.

That was the theory with our nuclear silo's..

I think the first thing you would want to do is find the right lot to build the house on.

My ideal lot would be one with some semblence of privacy, some opens fields, some wooded, good water and a good part of the land for 1000 yard target shooting. Thinking about it, I think Montana would be the lot I'd buy.[:D]

Actually I just found out what my house may be worth. As a result I may be looking to build in the next few years.

I'm looking for at least 10 acres of land and would prefer more. I would build a simple cape cod style house of about 1500-2000 sq ft. I would do this to appear average to the general public. Not wealthy enough to have some people jealous of me and not poor enough to appear a threat to the wealthier/snobier members of society. A cape for a first floor bedroom (remember my knees?) without the expense of a ranches expensive foundation.

I want it on high ground, not a mountain just a knoll is ok.
It would be postioned on the knoll so the full basement would be a walkout without stairs. I've had the power go out here and flood my basement.

The back of the house would face south. I would build a small solar heated greenhouse on the south facing back wall. Just a nice touch towards self reliance and a way to fight cabin fever in the winter. I would also explore the posibility of getting some or all of my electricity from alternative sources such as the sun.

I would heat with a dual fuel wood/oil hot water boiler. A nice touch during hard times when scrounging wood may be easier than buying oil.

Just a house that looked plain from the road, but a home that would give me alternatives to spending money during hard times. Something that didn't draw alot of attention, that might make you a victim of societies other elements.

I think I'd go with the "buy a section and build in the middle of it" scenario. I'd have a nice 1500 sq. ft. adobe above ground on the highest spot in the section (for good rf propagation), with a nice 800 yd. range outside the loading room window, a coupla catch-barrels for around 10,000 gals. of rainwater, the ground floor (basement for you Easterners), would have the walk-in gun room, pool table, airgun range, and dartboard.
Heat would be in the form of bio-diesel from weeds, litter, trash from the neighbors, woodchips, etc. gasified & mixed with a little somethin' to reform the esters of methanol into liquid. My power would be solar/battery system with an adjunct windmill for the well.
I'd have 2 stocktanks for growing shrimp (5 acres), and cutthroat salmon (4 acres).
I'd raise some chickens, pigs, and a cow or two to keep things running smoothly, and spend most of my time making and selling cheeserolls on the internet when I'm not busy loading or shooting or writing for SOF.

If you know it all; you must have been listening.WEAR EAR PROTECTION!
