Locked and loaded with pepper spray

I keep a can of pepper spray right by the front door. There has been some crime in my neighborhood. One night about 3 years ago I saw a guy walking across the front yard, about 10 pm on a Sunday. I opened the front door and he was sitting in my truck. He jumped out and I chased him all around the back yard. He was a black kid, about 25. Next time you watch the 200 meter hurdles on the Olympics watch how many finalists are 25 year old black guys, and how many are 50 year old white guys {with a bad knee} and you will figure what my chances of catching him were. Obviously he was trying to steal my truck. Now I told the neighbors about this and they all said I was crazy to go out, he could have had a gun. They said, call the police. Yeah, that is true, except around here it would take you ten minutes to get the cops to respond and it takes a good thief about half a minute to take your car. Plus my truck has a lot of custom made log building tools in it that are irreplacable. Now I believe that a person stealing your car deserves to be shot, but doing that will guarantee you 7 years in the state pen. I can't stand the idea of hiding behind the curtains and waiting for the police. These black kids come up here from the projects to steal cars, computers etc. and they know the people in this neighborhood are scared of them and they have 5-10 minutes to pull their crime before the cops arrive. So I researched and I got extra strength pepper spray, a big 3 oz can. It shoots a stream, not a spray. I have tested this can and it shoots about 12 feet. By the way the kid I chased all around the back yards never came back for my truck so I know I ran off one punk.

My favorite is still the kind made by ASP. It's this weird, pen-looking thing that you hold in your fist. When you take the safety off and press the button on the end it BLASTS pepper spray in a 20 foot cone.
I bought some a couple years back for my mother-in-law, and she ended up using it. I don't remember all the particulars, but she said the guy went DOWN. The only problem is I think it runs out pretty quickly, and for what it is it is very costly.

If he comes back spray away. Make sure it gets all in his eyes and clothing.

If you will blame gun makers for every shooting then blame car maker for every car accident.

Pepper spray is a defensive tool, nothing more. It is not a match or deterrent for someone armed with a gun. I would either get something equal to the task or take your neighbors' advice. Using pepper spray to defend your property or your life against an armed assailant is optimism you cannot afford.

Dances- You are saying that pepper spray is not a match for a gun. Thanks for the info. I would have never known.

Take the pepper spray in one hand, and your pistol in the other, after you call 911.

It's a matter of time before someone tries again to take that truck. I would consider installing some anti-theft devices in it. Check into one of them NASCAR quick release steering wheels, they can't steal it if she ain't got a steering wheel. Also car alarms are dirt cheap and having one on the truck will lower your insurance rate. A motion detecting light around the truck's parking area also could scare someone off...maybe only a kid though. If you have a Ford, they are the easiest to steal, buy a Chevy. To start any Ford you only have to remove two little screws on the bottom of the stearing column and the ignition switch falls off and can be switched on with anything. The part you put the key in merely moves a rod down the column.
