Need engine/trans lookup for Pontiac VIN

I was wondering if someone with GM books could look up what engine (and transmission if possible) this car has in it. It's an 1987 Pontiac Gran Prix and has a V-8.

2G2GK11H9H2202868

It SEEMS to me that the engine code is a letter and it seemed like it was the 7th character. I was thinking of taking the engine and transmission out and putting it in my old truck (1982) to sell it so I can replace my shot transmission and so I can keep my 400 4-bolt small block Chevy engine.
My truck has the 700R4 and I am hoping the tranny is the same, the engine isn't as much of an issue.

Thanks

If you ever want to be rid of the 400 let me know. I've been wanting to build a 350/400 stroker for a while.

I'm digging through my books, but I don't have any books for an '87. The engine code will be the eighth digit. From what I'm seeing and what I remember, you should have an 1987 model that was built in Canada but I'd need the book to break down the VIN further. Is the distributor on the front or rear of the engine? I seem to remember some of those cars running an oddball Buick 8-cyl engine. Not the 350 Buick but something similar. It looked a bit like the SB Chevy in its general layout but had BPO (Buick/Pontiac/Olds) bellhousing and bolt-up. If it is the Chevy engine, you will probably need to change the flexplate over when you swap motors. The pre-'85 SB had a different crank design than the post-'85 motors.

I don't know KJ, it isn't in front of me.

BDJ, I'd maybe sell the 400. I'm thinking of letting it go with the truck even. If memory serves it's still an original bore (but could probably use bored out by now), but the crank has been turned but I think it's still got enought metal left to be turned a couple more times. It's a 4-bolt main small block 400 which if I recall was only made from 1070-1972. I've got a lot of good factory parts on it, along with Sportsman II heads (2.02/1.60's), a towing cam, accel cap and coil, and countless other parts I can't remember any more. I built it for towing years ago and it had the pleasant side-effect of being fast too.

You know you can drop a 400 crank into a stock 350 and come out with a smokin' hot 386? Great engine for a Camaro or even a light truck. By the same token the 350 crank in a 400 block is a low compression torque monster that will pull a house down the road if you aren't in a hurry. I love fooling around with that old chevy stuff.

I looked it up in my books. The Grand Prix 87 only came with a 3.8 or 4.3 engine. The codes are a, or z. Your vin code doesn't match.

    Mikie the 8th digit shows to be "H" 5.0l V8 4bbl LG4 series 1987-1988 only.
    The trans should interchange.

Cool, it looks like the engine will swap, now I'll have to look under it to see if it has the square pan of a 700R4. It is totally against my wife's advice for me to tackle a engine/trans swap with the way my back has been over the past couple of years. I'll have to see. I just think I'd like to keep the 400 SBC for use later, and I think my truck with a non-slipping tranny would be worth half what it would be with a good one in it.

Thank you all very much, I didn't mean for ya'all to put that much time into it. I do appreciate it. [:)]
