magnets and steel shell casings question

OK, I have a question about picking up steel casings and other metal with a magnet. I have a 3 inch circular magnet that is on the end of a wand and I sweep the grass with it to pick up steel casings and other metal. It is rated at capable of lifting a 50 pound piece of metal and will attract a steel casing within 2 inches of the sweep.

Question...If I get a magnet rated at being able to lift 250 pounds and sweep the grass with it will it actually pick up more metal casings at a greater distance (maybe 4-5 inches) from the sweep than the 50 pound magnet? Thanks

Bruce

Dont know the answer to your question, but to make it easier, I spread an old tarp down on the ground when I shoot autos, if I'm where I can do that, and not at a range. Takes all the hunting out of the problem.[;)]

I agree. That is a good solution and I have several lightweight plastic tarps that I am not using for anything else now. My wife likes your suggestion too. Thanks.

They make aftermarket shell casing catchers that mount on the gun too. I'm not a fan of them as they change the way the gun feels.
Why do you pick up the steel casings? So that all that is left is good brass?
