Which of these two cartridges would you prefer for whitetail deer and why?

    Well duh!

    Just kidding.

I like the .257 Roberts because of light recoil and mine shoots good. I am kind of a fan of the somewhat odd stuff, like I am also a fan of the 250 Savage and the 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser. The 7X57 ain't bad either. The .260 is kind of a new kid on the block and is a nice round but I will stick with my .257. I can hit with it and it has all the "stuff" necessary to down a deer out to 250 yards and that is my limit for "my" accuracy.

Even though there are more potent cartridges out there like the 25-06, .270 and 7 mag or 30-06 I don't need them for our Kansas deer. (which ain't exactly small)

It is really up to you what you are more comfortable with. Also there are a slightly better selection of bullets available for the .257 caliber. I shoot a 100 grain Nosler ballistic tip and have had good results with it out of my .257.

I am a big fan of the 257 Robts as well, I have killed 6 deer in Mo with one. I like the 260 and have killed 1 doe with it, but it doesn't impress me as much as the 257. I wish the BLR would be reintroduced in 257 Roberts. I tend to favor the odd balls too, and I am way more likely to buy a 257 than any short-mag. Actually the biggest deer I've ever taken with a centerfire was with a Ruger 77 RL 257 Robts and a handload with 100gr Nosler BT at 225yd one shot and dropped the 200+ lb 8pt in his tracks!

.257 if I were choosing. Also a 25-06 would fit the bill nicely!
